Description
LEWIS MARCHIONE, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 THE SELF FEEDING DAUBER CO., INC., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- sET'Ts.
BLACKING-DAUBER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1920.
Applicationfmed July 21, 1919. Serial No. 312,423'.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Lnwis MARoHioNn, a subject of the King of Italy,'residin at Boston, in the county of Suffolk, in the tate of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Blacking- Daubers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rihis invention relates to the class of handoperated daubers used for applying liquid blacking or water to footwear and my present purpose is to provide a dauber in which a limited supply of blacking or water may be stored and which may be automatically expelled, a little at a time, as it may be needed.
My invention is. clearly illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dauber embodying my present improvements. Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal, sectional view of said dauber, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, and said Fig. 8 is a top or plan View of the dauber with the screw cap removed.
Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on the line 4?-41 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings the numeral 10 denotes the dauber head and 11 the handle, said head being formed with a cupped chamber 12 which is of such capacity that a considerable quantity of blacking may be stored therein; the otherwise open top of the dauber being closed by a screw cap 13. A
Secured to the lower portion of said head is a brush 14C of ordinary, or any approved, construction. Y
Seated in the chamber 12 is a cylinder 15 whose lower portion has a relatively smaller, downwardly extending, pipe 16 which connects the interior of the said cylinder with the brush 14; the head of the brush being perforated so that the pipe 16 may extend downward and discharge the blacking directly into the mass of bristles of which the brush is composed. The cylinder 15 is also provided with one or more circumferential openings 17 which connect the liquid storage chamber 12 with the cylinder 15 and thus permits the liquid in said chamber to pass into the cylinder under certain conditions, as I will explain. Within the cylinder 15 is a plunger 18 which is mounted on the end portion of a rod 19 which is of such length that it extends outward, through the shell of the head 10, and has fixed on its free (outer) end a knob-like handle by means of which the plunger can be pushed forward in the cylinder 15. In the cylinder is a spiral spring 20 which abuts the plunger 18 and acts with a constant tendency to force the plunger to the other end of the cylinder (see Fig. 4). l/Vhen the plunger is in its normal, or inoperative, position it opens the intake holes 17 and covers the discharge pipe 16, and permits the liquid to flow into the cylinder and cuts off the outiiow of liquid from said cylinder. When, however, it is desired to permit a limited quantity of the liquid to pass to the brush, it is only necessary to force the rod 19 and the connected plunger 18 forward, against the resisting force of spring 20, until the holes 17 are covered and the outlet to pipe 16 uncovered. The liquid is then permitted to enter the cylinder and to pass thence, through pipe 16, to the brush.A So soon as the necessary charge of liquid has been thus delivered to the brush the plunger is released and is immediately forced back to its initial position by thespring 2O, thus cutting off the outflow and opening the inflow openings 17. The operating handle 19 being located where it may be conveniently reached by a vlinger of the hand which holds the dauber,
may be readily operated to discharge into the brush any desired quantity of liquid even while the brush is being used.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim. as new and wish to secure by LettersV connected to said plunger, and elastic cushioning means between the plunger and the bottom of the receptacle.
2. In a device of the character described, a container, spreading means carried thereby, a closed substantially tubular receptacle Within said container, a reciprocable plunger Within said receptacle, a circumferentially grooved portion on said plunger intermediate its ends forming two plunger heads, two apertured portions on the Walls of said receptacle spaced from each other, adapted for alternate engagement with either plunger head, and communicating respectively With said container and said spread ing means, cushioning means between the bottom of said receptacle and one of said plunger heads, and operating means exterior of said container and said receptacle, and connected to said plunger. y
3. In a device of the class described, a brush, a liquid receptacle connected to said brush, a closed cylinder Within said receptacle, said cylinder being provided With inlet openings communicating With said receptacle, and an apertured discharge portion on .said cylinder spaced from said inlet openings, and communicating With said brush, tivo'plunger heads slidably mounted Within said cylinder, means connectinQa said heads of smaller diameter than said cylinder, a spring between one end of said cylinder and one of said heads, and an operating rod connected With the other head, and extending through the Wall of said rece tacle.
