PACKAGE TIE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22, 1919.
Patented Aug. 31, 1920.
WILLIAM FEBDI ANDR LEY,
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLI M FERDINAND.
' RiLnrgresiding' at Spokane, in county of Spokane State of Washingtom'acitizen of the Unlted States, have invented certain new; and useful Improvements in Package-Ties;
' and I do hereby declare the following to be a full; clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable'others skilled in the art to which it pertains to'make and use the same. 1
Myinvention relates to improvements in package ties and more particularly to a device for fastening, tying or bindingtrunks; boxes and other articles.
' The object of the invention is to provide a tying or binding device capable of being readily adjusted to. trunks boxes etc.- of
various'sizes. I
A further object is to provide a tylng de-- vice having means. whereby after being placed in position or adjusted on the trunk,
box or other article and tightened, will be capable of being tightened up still further and locked securely in place.
A further object is to provide a tying or binding device which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction and easy and effective in use.
The invention consists in the several features and m the construction combinatlon and arrangement of such features as more. fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings?- Flgure 1 is a top plan view of my inven Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tying or bmding device with the locking lever shown in unlocked position.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the tying or binding device.
what are commonly known assets of lazy tongs 2 and 2*, one at each end -thereof,each set of which comprises four "arms3, 4, 5 and 6 pivoted together by means of pivots 7 8, 9 and 10 and being provided with lateral arms 11 and 12 pivoted respectively on the .pivots 8 and 10 and longitudinal arms 13 pivoted on pivots 9. The arms 11, 12 and 13 H man tie the trunk, box or other article. "j
' The lazy tong- 2Yi s providedwith a longitudinal link 14;. which extends toward the-lazy'tong 2 and the lazy tong 2 is provided with a longitudinal link 15: pivoted on pivot 7.
A longitudinal locking lever' 16 pro vided, situated betweenthe link sfl l" andj15;
one endl17 of 'whichis pivoted on a pivot 19 of the link 14 and also'on a pivot 20 of'the Theopposite end 21 of the locking lever v 16 is turned or bent upward slightly in order that it may readily engage the upper surface 1 of a pivoted "latchgm' on arm 3, which is pro; I V vided with alongitudinal slot 23 engaged by, fa spring "controlledj'pin' 24:projecting upward through the arm the lazy tongs 2 and locks the lever 16 securelyin place.
In use'the chains,- straps, ropesor' other tying means are-adjusted in place around the 7' trunk, box or other article withthe ends 7 thereof secured to :the endsof the several arms 11, 12 and 13 and drawn as tightly around the trunk as is possible. to do with the hands, the locking lever being in the 1 position shown in Fig. 2,;then the locking lever is thrown toward the front .and its outer end placed on the surface of the-latch,
the latchmoved to the left until the'spring controlled pin 24: engages the slot 23 therein y when the lever will be securely locked in place. 4 i v 7' tion shown as appliedjand locked on a trunk.
left causes'th e'set of adjustable arms' to be The movementofthe locking lever to the moved toward each other all T slack in the chains being eliminated, and causes the around the trunlcandsecurelylocked therechains to be drawn tightly and immovably on bythe' locking lever by means of the I link 15.
To removethe chains it is. only necessary to press the; pin'2k down until it clears and is disengaged from the slot 23 ,in the link, move thelinkdownwardlynntil it releases the end of the lockinglever-and'then throw the-locking lever down to the right which will-cause the chains to slack up and become loose on the trunk, when they may be easily removed. r I do not wish'to be understood as limiting myself to the specific details of construction and arrangement as herein described and Patcnted rgug. 31', 1920." Application filed'Mayf 2 2 ,1919."Seria1 N i and modifications may be made in'the features of construction and arrangement in r the adaptationof thedevioe to the various provements.
conditions of use-Without departing from; the
spirit and scope of my invention and imto all such variations"andmodifieations as properly fall Within the scope of myinven tion and the terms of the followin'gclaimsz IWhat, I claim is 1. Ina tyingorbindingdevice, a plurality of sets of adjustable arms, the arms of each set pivotallyconneetedtogether, linkspivoted to said rams, a-lever situated interme diate'i said links and pivotally connected to each of saidlinks and adapted to move the said sets of adjustable arms toward and from each other and means for locking said lever. 2; In-atyingor bindingdevice, a plurality of sets of lazy tongs each having aplurality of lateral arms pivoted thereto, tying. or
. binding means connectedto said arms, anda lever connecting said lazy. tongsand adapted; to move them toward and from each other.
' 3. In a tyingo'r binding device, a pluralits of sets of lazy tongs each having a' plu ralityv of arms pivoted'thereto, tying or bind- 7 ing means connected to said arms, a lever connecting said lazy tongs and adapted to move them'tovvard and from each'other and I, therefore, reserve .the right" means on one of the lazytongs for locking pivoted to said lazy tongs, a lever pivotally.
connected to said longitudinal links, a latch pivotedto one of the lazy tongs a d a-pted to receive the endofi the lever and a pin on the said lazy tongs engaging said latch and thereby locking] the lever thereon-w V 5. In .a-tying or bin ding device, a plural ity of sets. of lazy tongs, a lever operatively connecting. said lazy tongs and: adapted, to
move them toward andvfrom-eachl other, a I
pin, anda latch having a slotandmountedon one of the sets ofllazy tongs, said pin adapted to engage the slot of thelatch and lock saidlever When phcedonsaidlatch/ V 6. Inatying or binding device, aplurality'of sets of lazytongs, a lever-operatively connecting said lazy tongs and. adapted to move themtoward and from each other, a
7 spring 1 controlled pin,- and a latch, having. a
slot andmounted on oneof thesets o'flazy v tongs, saidpin adapted'to engage the. slot of thelatch and lock said on said latch, 1 V
