IMPROVEMENT IN PORTFOLIOS FOR MUSIC.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. KooH, of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented an Improvement in Portfolios for Music, of which the following is a specification:

In Letters Patent No. 32,374, granted May 21, 1861, spear-shaped needles upon cords passed through eyes are shown as a means for securing together the leaves or sheets to be retained in the file-binder, and the spearshaped needles are received in metallic loops at the ends of elastic bands or straps.

My present invention is made for obviating difficulties experienced in the use of said files or binders. 1n the present case I employ an elastic at the end of the cord, as well as where the spear-shaped needle hooks into the loop at the end of the elastic strap. Thereby the cord yields freely when the portfolio or binder is opened, and said cord is not liable to be broken; whereas in the aforesaid patent the cord, being fastened at one end permanently to the cover, the cord does not yield at this point, audit is apt to be pulled off the cover or broken by the constant opening of the portfolio and its contents. With my present improvement the cord is less liable to be broken, and if worn out can be easily replaced. I also provide a flap within the file or portfolio that serves as a support for the cover to which it is attached, and allows for the portfolio to be used as a music stand or book, or leafdesk or support.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the portfolio or binder laid open, and with part of the inner flap removed; and Fig. 2.is a view of the parts edgewise of the cover when in position for supporting a sheet of paper or music, or for serving as a desk.

The covers a and b are of any desired size or character, and united by a back, 0. The elastic bands (1, metal loops 6, needles f, and eyes 2', for the cords l, are similar to those shown in aforesaid patent, but instead of the cords I being fastened to the inner edge of the cover a, as in said patent, they are passed through loops n and connected by loops 0 to the elastics or springs 19 upon the cover a. In consequence of this mode of connection, the cords I will yield at both sides of the music or other sheets through which they pass; hence the portfolio or binder can be more easily opened, and there is not as much risk of breaking the cords Z. In cases where the sheets of paper or music, or any of them, have to be removed, it can be easily done by untyin g the cords I from the loops 0 and drawingthem out, and if a cord breaks it can be replaced; neither of these things could easily be done in portfolios made according to aforesaid patent. Upon one of the covers, a, the flap m is attached at one edge, so as to swing. This forms a support for the cover when used as a desk or support for a sheet of music, or a book or paper. A ribbon or tape, 1', is attached at one end to the cover a. .The other end passes through a hole in the flap m, thereby holding the flap at any place to which it may be moved, the friction upon such ribbon or tape, where it passes through the hole, generally being sufficient to prevent the flap slipping.

I claim as my invention-- 1. The eyes In, loops 0, and elastic connections 19 to the cover a, in combination with the cords I, needles f, eyes t, and elastic connections (I, as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The flap an attached at one edge to the cover a, and provided with the tape or ribbon r for retaining said flap in place, when employed for supporting the cover a at an inclination for use as a music or sheet support, or desk, as set forth.
