TENSION DEVICE FOR SHUTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application filed February 21, 1920. Serial No. 360,524.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARNOLD WILD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Danielson, county of Windham, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Tension Devices for Shuttles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is aspecification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to improvements in thread guiding and tension mechanisms for loom shuttles and the object thereof is to provide a novel form of tension device which will impose a uniform thread and which will the thread from shuttle eye.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tension device which will present a relatively long thread engaging sur ace.
A further object of the invention is to provide a thread uiding and tension device for automatic filling replenishing loom shuttles which will automatically engage the thread during the flight of the shuttle across the loom and facilitate the threading of the eye and the retention of the thread within the e e.
A urther object of the invention is to provide a thread uiding and tension device which can readiI be applied to usual forms of shuttles wit out modification of the shuttle or material changes in the form of the threading device.
The invention is disclosed herein as applied to a shuttle adapted for. use in automatic filling replenishing looms, but it will be understood that the same may be applied to hand threading shuttles or other types of shuttles.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of the front end of a shuttle adapted for use in an automatic filling replenishing loom.
ig. 2 'is a transverse sectional view on lines 22 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view, partly in longitudinal section, of the front end of the shuttle and threading device, showing the improved tension device applied thereto.
Fig. 4 is a detail view, partly in section, upon a plane extending transversely of the axis of the shuttle showing, however, the tensioning device in elevation.
tension upon the also aid in preventing being thrown outof the Fig.5 is a side elevation of one form of threading device with the improved tension device applied thereto.
a chamber 2 for a filling carrier 3 and a channel 4 leading from said chamber in the direction of the axis of the shuttle, the shuttle having a side eye 5 and threading slot 6 leading from said eye to the channel 4.
A threading devlce 7, which is secured within the channel 4, is provided with a thread passage leading to the eye and with means for directing the thread or filling running from the filling carrier into said thread passage during the flight of the shuttle across the loom. The threading device may be constructed in any suitable manner to embody the improved tension device therein. In the preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings the threading device 7 comprises a solid block having a thread passage 8 in the form of a cylindrical aperture or bore extending longitudinally therethrough and located substantially in the longitudinal axis of the shuttle. A second cylindrical aperture or bore 9 is located directly above the bore 8, said apertures or bores being located in such proximity that a portion of the wall between them is cut away to form a threading slot 10.
The forward end of the threading device 7 presents an inturned beak 11 having a rearwardly extending horn 12 which projects across the vertical axial plane of the shuttle and serves to prevent the filling from escaping from the thread aperture when introduced therein. The front wall of the beak 11 is so located as to form the rear wall of the threading slot 6 leading to the eye 5 of the shuttle and desirably may be provided with a flanged portion 13 which enters a complementary notch in the body of the shuttle thus aiding in securing the threading device firmly in place.
The u per wall of the aperture or bore 9 is provi ed at one side of the vertical plane with a threading slot 14: extending lon 1tudinallilpf the shuttle, the upper walls 0 the three. g device curving downwardly toward said slot to facilitate the introduction which extends longitudinally of the thread passage 8- and presents a helical rib, preferably of long pitch, which extends in thedirection corresponding to that inwhich the thread is unwound from thefilling carrier so that the thread readily engages it when introduced into the thread passage.
' reason of the fact that the bar 16 with the helical rib thereon extends substantially longitudinal of the axis of the thread passage, a
relatively long thread engaging surface 1s presented which will impose a suflicient tension'npon the thread without bending the running thread to such an extent as to cause it to break.
The tension bar may be provided with a helical spiral of such pitch as will produce the proper tension upon the running thread or filling, for it will be understood that the tension imposed upon the thread will be proportional to the length of the. pitch of said helical rib.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention herein the bar 16 is in the form of a tapered flat plate which is twisted about its axis to present two helical ribsv 17 and 18 which run in a direction corresponding to that in which the thread is unwound from the filling carrier, the flat or gently curved portion 19 between said ribs serving to enga g e the thread and impose tension upon it. he tension bar 16, as illustrated herein, is provided at one end with an ofi'set and preferably wider portion 20 which is suitably anchored to the shuttle body or preferably to the end of the threading device lwgvlidich is nearer the chamber 2 of the shuttle o y. t
The free end 21 of the tension bar 4 desirably is located approximately opposite the eye 5 of the shuttle so that the thread runs directly from the end of said threadingdevice to the-eye, desirably passing beneath a horn 22 extending downwardly from the beak 11 of the'threading device. I Any suitable means may be provided for tension device in sai anchoring the threading device in position. As illustrated inFig. 3 the ofit'set portionv 20 of the tension bar extends into a recess 23- in the underside of the rear end of the thread in Fig. 3, except that the under-face of the extension 27 of the tension device is flush with7the'under-surface of the threading device In the embodiment of the invention illus trated in Fig. 7 the threading device 7 is rovided with a rearward extension 28 having a flan 29 extending upwardly in parallelism w1th the rear face 30 of the threading device 7 and the tension bar 16 is provi e d with an offset and folded anchoring portion 31 which lies between the flange 29 and the rear face 30 of the threading device.
A plate or shim 32 may be introduced between the anchoring portion 31 of the threading device and the flange 29 and the upper end 33 of thefiange 29 crimped over the shim in such a manner as to clamp it,
and the'anchoring portion of the tension device firmly in position.
Various other expedients may be provided for securing the tension device in proper position in the thread passage of the threading device, or in the thread aperture in the shuttle if no threading device of the character disclosed is used.
It will be understood that various modifications in form, construction and arrangement of parts may bemade within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
