IMPROVEMENT IN RETAINERS FOR PRESSED AND MOLDED CiGAR-BUNCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,031 dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. BREWER,
' of Gharlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Retainers for Holding Pressed and Molded Cigar-Bunches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of my retainer. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the center of my retainer with a cigar-bunch in place there- 1n.
Retainers for holding cigar-bunches while being set are at present constructed in two 1 or more pieces, and where a bunch with too much tobacco is placed therein it frequently happens that the parts of the retainer cannot be accurately closed or brought together at the seam or line of their union, and consequently a ridge or raised line is made and left upon the bunch after its removal from the retainer, and remains after the wrapper is applied and the cigar finished.
This difficulty at and near the tip or point of the cigar 'w as obviated by me in the manner described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 11$,Q8, granted to me on the 29th day of August, 1871 and to prevent the oc currence of this ridge throughout the entire length of the cigar is' the object of my present invention, which consists in a mold of the form of and slightly larger than the lower portion or tip of the cigar-bunch, in combination with a tube of the form of and slightly larger than the remaining portion of the bunch, the diameter of the mold and that of the tube where they unite corresponding exactly to each other in size.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A is a block of wood or other suitable material, provided with a series of holes or molds, a, the form of each of Y which corresponds exactly to that of the portion of the cigar-bunch c at and near its tip, the size of each hole being slightly larger than thetip of the cigar-bunch 0 when first placed therein. bis a tube of metal or other suitable material, the interior diameter of the bottom of which is precisely thatof the top of the hole or mold a, so that the interior of the hole and that of a. the tube form one continuous smooth surface. The mold a in the block and the tube 11 compose the upper and lower portions of the retainer, the diameter of which at any point throughout its length is a little larger than the corresponding portion of the cigar-bunch when it is placed therein after being taken from the machine in which it is pressed, by which construction the bunch is allowed to expand and assume the size which, when the Wrapper is applied, is intended to be given the finished cigar.
From the foregoing it will be seen that not only the tip, but the remaining portion of the cigar is free from any raised line or ridge, which occurs so frequently when the ordinary description of retainers is used, as a cigarbunch, if made too large, will not fit into a retainer constructed in accordance with my invention, and my improved retainer thus serves as a guide for the operator, and prevents him from putting too much stock into the bunch, which would impair the draft of the cigar when smoked.
Instead of a series of molds, a, being made together in one piece, each mold may be made separately and independently of the other and placed in a suitable rack or holder without departing from the spirit of my invention.
