Be it known that I, CLYDE O. CONNOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, and useful Improvements in Power-Driven Hair-Clippers, of which the following is a description, referring to the accompanying drawings, which forma part of this specification.
The principal objects of the invention consist in the simplicity and economy ,of construction; the elimination of universal joints and to a'novel combination of mechanical elements for the economical transmission of power, making it possible to operate the clipper by power obtained from a storage battery when the electric current for operating the motor is not obtainable from commercial electric power installations as is the case in many rural and other localities where electric lighting and power companies do not operate.
In the drawings, Figure 1' illustrates a side view of my hair clipping device with portions'in section to more fully illustrate the associated elements of the invention.

front view of the same. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the stock of the hair clipping device as indicated by 10 furnishes-at 11 a bearing for the driving shaft 12 which is adapted to connect through the flexible shaft or cable 13 within the flexible tube 14 with an electric motor not shown.

Lugs 24 integral with the'blade 21 project upwardly through elongated slots 25 in the cutting blade 22 and a threaded bolt 26 projects upwardly from the lower base .portion of the stock 10 and furnishes the spindle upon which the oscillatable shaft 27 pivots. The shaft 27 is enlarged at 27 to "provide a proper bearing around the bolt 26; the upper end of the shaft 27 is provided with an elongated slot 28 within which the V collar 20 carried by the crank 19 is adapted to rotate as the crank 19 travels to and fro in said slot 28. The washer 29 serves to retain the slotted end of the shaft 27 in its proper position. The lower end of the shaft 27 terminates in a downwardly bent lug 27 which engages within the slot 23 in the slidable blade 22.
T he blade 22 is held in acutting position upon the blade 21 by means of the blade 'housing cover 30. This cover 30 is provided with a hole 31 through which the bolt 26 projects in the operative position seen in Fig. 1. Two front bearings or lugs 32 and 33 respectively project from the cover 30 to "a contact against the blade 22 while a rear bearing 34: projects to contact against a spring plate 35 attached at 36 to the cap plate 37. The means for holding the blades 22 .and21 in a cutting position is attained by tightening the tension nut 38" upon the cover 30; the two bearing supports 32 and 33 thenexert a mild and equal pressure to hold the blade 22 firmly against the lower blade 21.; the third point of support 34 resting upon the spring plate 35 resiliently maintains the tension without making it a constant as would be the case if the three supports 32, 33 and 3 1' were rigidly positioned by the tension exerted by the nut 38. It is obvious that when the electric motor operates either from current provided by a storage battery or from a power service that rotation will be given the gear 17 and the crank 19 carried thereby wlll occasion oscillation. to the shaft 27 pivoted at 27 upon the bolt 26, the oscillation of the lug end 27. of the shaft 27 bein then engaged within the slot 23 of the idable cutting to travel to and fro upon the lower blade 21 whereby their coacting cutting teeth tend to easily and readily out such hair as may be introduced therebetween. The blades 21 and 22 are beveled as disclosed for better results in operation.
The cap plate 37 is fitted around the rear V-shaped portion 39 of the cover 30 and is supported at its lower end by lugs 40 resting against the inner wall of the stock 10. The upper end of the cap plate 37 is secured by screws 41 to the stock 10.
Such modifications may be employed as lie within the scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention what I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hair cutting device, a hollovw.
stock, a stud integral with said stock; a gear wheel, carrying a crank, rotatably mounted on said stud; a pinion, fixedly fastened to a flexible driving shaft housed in said stock, engaging said gear wheel; a lower cutting blade fixedly attached to said stock, a slotted slidable upper blade POSI? tioned upon said lower blade and lugs 0n the lower blade engaging within slots in the upper blade; a bolt upwardly projecting from ,the base of said stock, an oscillatable shaft pivotally mounted upon said bolt; said shaft, at its upper end, having ,an elongated slot and within which slot the crank of the gear wheel is operatively positioned, the lower end of said shaft engaging within a slot in the upper blade for the purposes specified.
2. In a hair cutting device, a hollow stock, a stud integral with said stock; a gear wheel, carrying a crank, rotatably mounted on said stud; a pinion, fixedly fastened to a flexible driving shaft housed in said stock, engaging said gear wheel; a lower cutting blade fixedly fastened to said stock, a slotted slidable upper blade positioned upon said lower blade and lugs on the lower blade engaging within slots in the upper blade; a
bolt upwardly projecting from the base of said stock, an oscillatable shaft pivotally mounted upon said bolt, said shaft at its upper end having an elongated slot and within which the crank of the gear wheel is operatively positioned; the lower end of said shaft engaging within a slot in the upper blade whereby rotation of said driving shaft through the allied. mechanism above claimed operates to transmit motion to said upper blade for the purposes specified; and tension means for resiliently maintaining the cutting position of the upper and lower blades during such operation.
3. In a power driven hair cutting device, a hollow stock, a stud integral with said stock; a gear wheel, carrying a crank, rotatably mounted on said stud; a pinion, fixedly fastened to a flexible driving shaft housed in said stock, engaging said gear wheel; a lower cutting blade, fixedly fastened to said stock, a slotted upper blade slidably positioned upon said lower blade and lugs on the lower blade engaging within slots in the upper blade; a bolt upwardly projecting from the base of said stock, an oscillatable shaft pivotally mounted on said bolt; said shaft at its upper endhaving an elongated slot and within which slot the crank of the gear wheel is operatively positioned; the lower end of said shaft engaging within a slot in the upper blade; a cap plate fixedly coverin said stock, a spring plate attached to sai cap plate; a housing 'cover mounted upon the shaft pivot bolt,
said cover having two bearing lugs in contact upon said upper blade and a third lug in contact upon. said spring plate and a nut on said bolt above said cover adjustable thereon for the purposes specified.
