To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LUTHER E. Gneonsiz'rn, a citizen of the United States, residinpr at Duluth, in the eounty of Saint VLouis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cheek Writer-s,y of which the followingr is a aperitieat ion.
The subject of this` invention is a rheek writer`r and the main obje-xl vonteinplated h v the invention is the provision of :i rheoh writer whit-h will write a complete eheeh.

Also mounted on these shafts and rotatable thereon within the bifurcated forward end of each type bar 9 is a chain Wheel 10, herein shown as a sprocket wheel.
Passing about each wheel 1() and-resting 0n its type bar 9'is a chain 11, some of the links of which, indicated at 11 are type. As will be seen most clearly in Fig. 3, these bars are so arranged that by rotating the Wheels the chains will be moved rectilinearly. longitudinally of the bars and the type arranged in rows extending horizontally and spaced vertically apart.
For the purpose of moving the chains about the wheels and along the type ba rs 9. angularly formed arms 13 extend down Wardly and rearwardly from each button and havev their rearmost ends pivotally secured to the chains 11 so that, by sliding a button along its slot the chain may be moved to bring any type desired in position at the rear end of the type bar 9 and before the proper slot 6.
-That the buttons may be moved to positions to bring the proper type into position to print, characters are arranged beside each slot in the key board and, in'order that a button maybe brought to rest and retained at a position corresponding to a selected character, ratchet bars 14 are arranged longitudinally of the supporting frame and beside the slots, and the attenuated ends of these bars are pivotally secured in supportN ing bars 15 which extend transversely of the frame and are positioned to underlie the s ace between the ends of the rows ofr slots.
pawl 16 is secured to the depending neck of each button and is adapted to contact its ratchet bar to permit the button to be moved toward the rear end of the machine but to normally prevent its return toward the,
front end of the machine. As will be understood, the teeth of the ratchet bars are so spaced as to hold the buttons at each character marked upon the key board which characters are so arranged as to bring the corresponding type to the ends of the type bars and in position before the slots 6.
After the type has been moved into posi tion as just set forth. the check is )laced on the plate or platen 17` the lower e ge of which is hingedly connected to the lower edge of the rear plate 6, and a lever 18, which rises from one end of a horizontally sposed rock bar 19, which bar is journaled within the' casing 1 at the rear end and near the bottom thereof, and which lever extends above the key-board 2, passing through a slot formed 1n the keydioard1 is grasped and thrown toward the front of the machine to bringr the platen in contact with the type and print the check.
To swing the platen about its hinge, arcuaic links or bars 2() are connected to the platen near each end thereof and extend through slots l'ornieiLin the rear plate G having their other ends connected, the one to the lever 1H. and the other to an arm 21 which rises from the other end of the rock bar 19.
When the platen 17 is swung to contact the type, it also becomes necessary to move the back plate (i inwardly that the type may protrude through the slots 6' Aand be in-position to be Inet by the platen. For this purpose a rock shaft Z2 extends transversely of the machine adjacent the back plate and has its ends journaled in the side plates of the casing. Each cam plate is also formed with au upstanding yoke 25 which normally straddles a wiper arm 2G extending from the lever 18 and the arm 21, re spectively. Upon initial movement of the lever 18 and arm Q1, the wiper arms 26 throw thc cams to remove the cam faces 25 from contact with the rear plate 6 and, through the cam groove and rods 24. draw the plate inwardly.

This carriage may be reciprocated in any of the usual and well known ways but, as the same forms no part of the present invention, specific means for operating the carriage have not been shown but the same may he operated by hand.
After the check has been printed it bccoines necessary to return the type and the buttons to their normal positions.
