TABULATING DEVICE FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 735,367, dated August 4, 1903.

To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLF-HALsTRIoK, a
subject of the King of Prussia, German Em peror, residing at Cologne, in the Kingdom ofPrussia,Empire of Germany,have invented a newand useful Tabulatin g Device for Typetabulating devices for type-writers; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide the paper-roll carriage with afeedingrack adaptedto swing around a parallel horizontal axis placed in the longitudinal direction of the carriage; second, to provide means for holding said swinging feeding-rack in en-' gagement with the feeding means; third, to provide a horizontal scaled axle parallel to said swinging feeding-rack and oarrying'two arms and between them an internal rack whereby a rectangular frame is formed; fourth, to arrangethe one of said two arms leasing the carriage; fifth, to provide means for transmitting the movements from the tabulator-key to thesaid one arm; sixth, to
provide a plurality of narrow adjustable stops on the scaled axleand the internal rack and engaging the latter, and, seventh, to provide the carriage with a swinging stop so arranged as to strike against either adjustable stop for stopping the carriage while it is capable of being raised out of the wa by either adj ustable stop. Iattain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through the rear part of the frame of a type-writer and through the paper-roll carriage on the line A B in Fig. 3, the parts of the tabulating device being shown in their usual positions when at rest. Fig. 2 is a similar cross-section on the same line to show the parts of the tabulating device in their respective positions 3 is a plan of the same. In the drawings I have shown the new tabulating device as applied to a box-shaped frame used in various well-known type-writers but it will be understood that the new device can also be applied toother kinds of type-writer frames. All the other parts of the typewriter are omitted from the drawings, as they form no part of my invention. The paperroll carriage h is assumed to be guided horizontally in any well-known manner, but not shown in the drawings, while the paper-roll (not shown) may be arranged for being raised and lowered, as usual.
On the'carriage ha U-shaped frame is (see To this frame a feeding-rack 7c is affixed, which thus swings around a horizontal axis in the longitudinal direction of the carriage h. The
swinging feeding-rack engages with either the stationary pawl z or the movable pawl z, mounted on the rocking lever o. Preferably a leaf-spring k is inserted between the carriage h and the longitudinal part of the frame it, so as to hold the swinging feeding-rack 7c in engagement with either pawl 53 ore. The rocking lever 0 is assumed to be mounted to turn-on pins 0, provided on suitable armso of the machine-frame. This lever o is further assumed to be actuated from either keylever in any known manner'for example, by means of a rod 0 (see Fig. 4) and a'lever 0 of which latter only a part is shown. On depressing any of the keys by the respeo tive transmitting means the rocking lever 0 will be moved in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1, and on the key being again released the lever 0 will be moved backward. Thereby in the usual manner the carriage h, with the swinging feeding-rack 7t and the paper-roll, will be fed forward tion of the respective spring.
The rear part a of the machine-frame is provided with two end supports 6 b, on the under the acupper ends of which the scaled axle c is mounted to turn by means of a pointed pin b and a pointed adjusting-screw 19*. (See Fig. 3.) The scaled axle c carries two arms d and c, between'which the internal rackfis secured, the whole forming a rectangular frame swinging around the axis of the axle c. The one arm a extends beyond the internal rackfand is shaped somewhat like a hook, (see Fig. 1,) so as to nearly touch the frame k,while leaving free room for the rack traveling longitudinally. The front end of the lever 6 is provided with a projection 12, placed parallel to the longitudinalpart of the frame 76 and covered with leather, so asto serve as a brake. The tabular-key lever m, of which only the rear part is shown, swings around the pin m and is pressed upward by aspring p. It is pivotally connected with the hookshaped lever e by means of the rod m, the lever m the shaft m the lever 6 and the rod 6.
On the scaled axle c and the internal rack f several (in the drawings two) narrow adj ustable stops g g are mounted to slide. For shifting either adjustable stop 9 its pawl Z is withdrawn from the rackf by means of the head it, and on the latter being again released the pawl tengages the respective tooth-space.
On the carriage h the swinging stop Z is mounted to turn on the pin 12, (see Figs. 5 and 6,) and its movement is limited by a screw to, secured in the carriage h and engaging the slot wof the stop Z. The free end Z of the swinging stop Z is bent rearward and so much that it can strike against either adjustable stop g when the latter is raised.
The tabulating device is operated as follows: The two adjustable stops g g are adjusted according to the scale on the axle c and in correspondence with the places on the paper where the first types of the columns are to be printed. On depressing the tabular key, and thereby also its lever m, the projection a of the lever 6 will by the parts an, m m 6 e, and e be moved in the direction of the arrow 1, so as to lift the swinging feedingrack 70 out of engagement with the feedingpawls z z. Thereupon the carriage It will be released, so that under the action of the respective spring it will move forward until the bent end Z of the swinging stop Z strikes against the first adjustable stop g, when the carriage will be stopped. (See Fig. 2.) For regulating the speed of the moving carriage the tabular key can be more or less strongly depressed, so as to press the projection '11, covered with leather, against the frame 70, whereby a certain amount of friction is produced. On again releasing the tabular key the various parts m, m, m m 0, e, and 70 with 70 are returned to their initial positions, partly by their own weights and partly by the spiral spring 19. Then the movable pawl 2 will engage the feeding-rack 7c, and on depressing the respective keys the carriage 71. will be fed forward, while the corresponding types are printed on the paper; -When the last type of the column has been printed,the tabular key is again depressed, so as to cause the carriage h to move forward until it is again stopped by the bent end Z of the stopZ striking against the raised second adjustable stop g. Should the bent end Z happen to be still above the first adjustable stop g, (see Fig. 4,) this circumstance would not prevent the tabular key from being depressed. The
raised first adjustable stop g would merely lift the swinging stopZ in the direction of the arrow 3 in Fig. 5, and on the carriage h moving forward the bent end Z will soon leave the raised first adjustable stop g and drop, so that it can strike against the second adjustable stop g and stop the carriage. If it is desired to write nothing in the first column, but something in the second column, all that is required is merely to depress the tabular key until the carriage stops for the first ti1ne,then to release and again to depress the tabular key. The adjustable stops 9 g being narrow, it is possible to print types in narrow columns. The reason is that the bent end Z of the swinging stop Z is very small, (see Fig. 6,) and therefore the two stops 9 g can be placed so near each other as to leave just sufficient room for the bent end Z engaging between them upon depressing the tabular key, so that the bent end Z will strike against the second stop g,and th-us stop the carriage. This means that in this case the tabular column is the narrowest and its width is equal to the distance from the right-hand face of the second stop g to the right-hand face of the first stop g. The stops 9 g present the advantage that they will stop the carriage it safely, since the teeth of the internal rack f, in which the pawls t engage,
.are very near the places against which the bent end Z of the swinging stop Z strikes.
Of course more than two adjustable stops g g may be employed. Preferably they are not made in one piece, as shown, but in two pieces, or they are so shaped that they can be put over the scaled axle c and the internal rack f and again taken off without taking the swinging frame a (Z efto pieces.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is
1. In a type-writer, the combination with a carriage, of two lovers on left and right ends of said carriage, a feeding-rack securedbetween said two levers, a feeding mechanism therefor, means for pressing downward said feeding-rack and holding it in engagement with said feed mechanism, a turnable rear shaft in the machine-frame parallel to said carriage, a rectangular frame secured on said rear shaft, a plurality of adjustable stops on tabular key being depressed, a swinging stop on the rear of said carriage for striking against rsassr either of said adjustable stops, and means for I limiting the downward movement of said swinging stop, substantially as set forth.
2. In a type-writer, the combination with a carriage, of two levers on left and right ends shaft, an arm fastened on said rear shaft for raising said feeding-rack out of engagement with said feed mechanism on the tabular key being depressed, said arm serving at the same time as a brake for said carriage, a swinging stop on the rear of said carriage for striking against either of said adjustable stops, and a pin for limiting the downward movement of said swinging stop, substantially as set forth.
