HYMAN GOLDSTEIN. 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t 7 1920.
Application filed March 14,1919. Serial No.'282,709.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HYMAN GoLDsTmN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to closures for ink bottles or the like and has for an object to provide a novel means for controlling the flow of material through the closure in the form of a manually operable valve of a new type adapted specifically for the purpose intended.
Another object of the invention is to providea valved closure of an ornamental design, and constructed in such a manner as to permit its formation of plastic composi tion or other material not acted upon by ink or other corrosive fluids.
In addition to the foregoing, this invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they pp Figure 1 is a view in section of a valved bottle closure constructed in accordance with m invention.
ig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of the preceding figure, and
Fig. 3 is a view-similar to Fig. 1 with the valve in opened position.
With reference to the drawings 10 indicates a bottle having the neck 11, the latter having a relatively wide bead 12 at its mouth around which a metallic band 13 is embraced. Said band also surrounds the enlarged base portion 141 of a frusto-conical closure member 15 having its upper end formed cylindrical as at 16. The member 15 is preferably formed of plastic composition that may be molded into shape and that is not aflected chemically by corrosive liquids. A curved passage 17 is formed through the member opening centrally at the bottom thereof and also at the side. The lower end of the passa e is enlarged to form a circular recess 18. a vertical passage 19 is also formed in the member intersecting the passage 17 and opening at it upper end into a recess 20.
A composition rod 21 is located in the passage 19 and is formed integrally at its lower end with a valve member comprising a discous portion 22 to fit the passage 17 and a larger concentric discous port' n 23 to fit the recess 18. The periphery o fithe portion 23 is cut away at diametrica ly opposite points to formnotches or by-passes 24. A notched washer 24: may be applied to the disk 23 to form a tight joint with the seat at the bottom of the recess 18. A coiled spring 25 is located in the recess 20 and embraces the upper end of the rod 21. A cap 26 is provided, semispherical in form having a central apertured boss 27 to receive the end of the rod 21 when the cap' is inverted over the top of the closure. An annular flange 28 is also formed on the cap to inclose the upper end of the member 15 to finish off. the appearance of the device and to eliminate any corners that .may engage an object to accidentally open the valve.
An air vent 30 is also formed through the member 15.
In use, the bottle is inverted and the cap 26 pressed inward whereupon the valve leaves its seat and the contents may flow into the recess 18, through the notches 24 and into the passage 17 as shown in Fig. 3. When the cap is released the valve returns to its seat under the influence of the spring and the bottle is effectually sealed, preventing spilling of its contents and evaporation. Other uses and advantages will readily occur to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Ilnited States Letters Patent is In combination with a bottle, a closure in the form of a truncated cone having a broad base flange to rest on a bottle neck and having its upper end extended to form a cylindrical portion, means for securing the closure to the bottle, said closure having a circular recess in each end and a curved passage extending from the base recess, and smaller in diameter to form a valve seat, a rod slidable in the closure, a disk formed on the rod to .fit the base recess and having notches of a depth less than the width of the valve seat,
a washer having corresponding notches resting on the disk, a semispherical cap member, a peripheral flange and a central bar formed thereon said rod extending into thebar and the flange fitting the cylindrical portion of the closure and a spring in the upper recess and surrounding the rod to seat the disk, movement of the cap and disk being limited to prevent complete withdrawal of the disk from the recess.
In testimony whereof I afiix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
