UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
ALPHEUS' J". FREEMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MOLLIE Il. IBARNHART, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
To all wlw/nt it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALrHnUs J. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for attaching the rear portion of a collar to the corresponding portion of the shirt neck band, and its object is toprovide a novel and improved button for this purpose by which the parts to which it is attached are kept in proper place.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure l is a perspective view of the button, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing its application.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the rear portion of the neck band of a shirt having a button hole 6. A fragment of the collar is shown at 7, the same having a button hole S. The collar is attached to the neck band by passing through the button holes of said parts the button fastener which is the subject matter of the present applica- L tion for patent, and which will now be described.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a sheet metal plate 9 having intermediate its end a depending shank l0 provided at its extremity with an oval enlargement ll. At the ends of the plate 9 are depending wings 12, located, respectively, on opposite sides of the shank 10. The plate 9 and its wings l2 are fiat and lie in the same plane, whereas the shank l0 is offset slightly from one side of the plate, it being joined to the latter by a short lateral bend 13.
i formed by From the shank l0 is struck up a tongue let to project upwardly from the bend 13 at a point Where the latter meets the shank. The tongue la therefore faces the plate 9 and is spaced therefrom the distance the shank l() is ofl'set from the latter.
The plate 9 and its wings l2 are left fiat, whereas `the shank l0 and its head l1 are dished so as to obtain greater rigidity.
The entire device is made out of a single piece of thin sheet metal suitably plated or otherwise finished.
In use, the shank l0 is passed through the button holes (i and 8 to position the plate 9 and its wings l2 on that side of the neck band which is next to the wearers neck, whereas the shank l0 and its head l1 come between the folds of the collar 7 if a collar of the turn-down style is used. Ordinarily, the device will first be attached to the neck band, and then the collar is attached by slipping its button hole over the shank 10. When the device is in use, the shoulder the bend 13 seats against the top edge of the button hole 8 and the tongue 14 engages the adjacent portion of the collar, whereby the parts are held securely together, and the collar is prevented from slipping down on the shank 10.
I claim:
A button comprising a plate having depending wings at its ends and a depending shank intermediate its ends, the wings being on opposite sides of the shank, said shank having a lateral bend at its upper end whereby it is joined to the plate, said bend forming a shoulder and off-settin g the shank from the plate, and a tongue integral with the shank and projecting upwardly therefrom at its junction with the bend to a height less than that of the plate, said tongue being located opposite to and facing the center of the plate, and being spaced therefrom.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
ALPI-IEUS J. FREEMAN.
