UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERNAND E. DHUMY, F ENGLEWOOD, NEWJERSEY, ASSIG-NOR T0 RAMP BUILDINGS CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A. CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
$TORAGE BUILDING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
110 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FERNAND E. DHUMY,
a citizen of the United States and resident of Englewood, county of Bergen, and State oi? New Jersey, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Storage Buildings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in building structures, and more particularly to storage buildings, the improvements being especially applicable to garage structures for storing motor vehicles.
One object of the invention is to provide a storage building so constructed that vehicles may travel under their own power from floor to floor of the buildingto and from storage spaces on the various floors.
Another object of the invention 1s to pro viole a storage building having storage space on its several floors and soconstructed that vehicles may travel under their own power from floor to floor to and from storage spaces on the several floors with the vehicles forming the ascending and descending streams of traffic moving in the same direction over the several floors.
A further object of the invention is to providea compact construction for garages in which a maximum number of vehicles may be stored in a structure of given size and in which numerous vehicles may readily travel to and from their storage spaces at the same time Without confusion. and without interference between ascending and descending vehicles, the ascending and descending streams of traflic moving in distinct zones.
in the drawings: Figure 1 is a horizontal section on the line II of Fig. 4 illustrating one construction embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 a vertical sectional View on the line ill-II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view on the line lll-l1 of Fig.1);
Fig. i a vertical sectional view on the line IV-IV of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 a horizontal sectional View on the line V---V of Fig. 8 illustrating another con struction embodying the invention;
Fig. 6 a vertical sectional view on the line Fig. 7 a vertical sectional view on the line VII-VII of Fig. 5; and
Fi 8 a vertical sectional view on the line Vl'lL-VIII of Fig. 5.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, 1 designates the outer walls of the building and 2 designates an intermediate partition or dividing wall. The outer walls 1 are provided with suitable window openings 3 and also with suitable doorways 4 permitting access to the ground floor 5 of the building. The upper floors of the building are arranged in two series, the series of floors 6 at one side of the dividing wall 2 being spaced equal distances apart and the lower floor 6 being spaced above the ground floor 5 a distance equal to the distance-between the floors of this series. The series of floors 7 at the opposite side of the dividing wall 2 lie in planes midway between the planes of the floors "6, the lowermost floor 7 lying in a plane midway between the planes of the ground floor 5 and the lowest of the series of floors 6. That portion of the ground floor 5 underlying the series of floors 6 forms in effect the lowest of two vertical series of floors, the floors of'one of which series are arranged in planes intermediate the planes of the floors oi the other series.
Adjacent one of the outer walls of the building is a vertical series of similarly in clined superposed ramps 8 each of which extends through the dividing wall 2 an equal distance on each side ofsaid wall and con nects one of the'series of floors 7 with the next lower. one of the series of floors at the opposite side of the dividing wall. Adj-acent the opposite side wall of the building is a vertical series of ramps9, inclined in a direction opposite to the inclination of the ramps 8. extending through the dividing wall and connecting each floor 7 with the next higher one of the floors 6. Alongside the series of ramps 8 is a series of ramps 10 extending through the dividin wall in clined in the same direction as the ramps 9 and connecting each floor 7 with the next higher one of the floors 6. Alongside the series of ramps 9 is a vertical series of ramps 11 extending through the dividing wall 2, said ramps 11 being inclined in the same direction as the ramps 8, and connecting each of the floors 7 with the next lower one of the floors at the opposite side of the wall 2. I
Each of the floors 6 and 7 has an unobstructed passa e or driveway communicating at one end with one ofthe ramps 8 and one of the ramps 10 and communicating at its opposite end with one of the ramps 9 and one of the ramps 11. Each floor 6 and 7 is also provided with storage space at one side of the driveway along the wall 2 between the ramps 10 and 11 and also with storage space at the opposite side of the driveway between the driveway and the outer wall of the building opposite the dividing wall.
The storage spaces on each floor may be subdivided in any suitable manner. Inthe construction shown, which is especially designed for use as a garage, the two main line of trailic move from floggt floorrby the vehicles" forming one line of trafiic will ascend from floor to floor and the other vehicles will descend from floor to floor.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 8,
inclusive, a different relative arrangement of the four series of ramps is shown, thr two series of ramps 8 and 11 being arranged at opposite sides of the building and the two series of ramps 9 and 10 being located alongside each other at the center of the building.
It will be obvious that the four series of ramps may be arranged at various other points along the wall 2, if desired, and that in'large buildings a plurality of groups of four series of ramps each may be employed if desired.
