PATENT OFFICE.
CARL VOIGT BODOM, 0F TAMPICO, MEXICO.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR LIFEBOATS.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
Application filed May 4, 1920.- Serial No. 378,747.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Voio'r BonoM, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Tampico, Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Lifeboats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
he present invention has for its object a device for securing life-boats to the deck, and the object of the invention is to provide an arrangement whereby it is possible to make the boat ready for use in the shortest possible time. The arrangement according to the invention comprises two or more stools or blocks gripping the keel of the boat and being fastened on horizontal rotatable cross shafts under the boat. Further the arrangement comprises arms fastened to said cross shafts, said arms being adapted to be connected with hooks gripping the gun-wales of the life-boat. The connection between the said hooks and arms comprises a pelican-hook or the like, so that it may be easily loosened.
When the arms are disconnected from the hooks and swung down toward the deck, the stools are simultaneously brought out of engagement with the boat keel and the boat is free.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a side View of one form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the stools.
The arrangement comprises two cast iron stools or blocks A fastened on shafts B,
which are mounted in bearings C on the deck. On their inner ends shafts B are provided with arms serving as turning handles for the shafts and at the same time adapted to be connected with hook chains E.
The stools A are provided at the top with grooves F fitting about the boat keel G and are slightly rounded at one side.
The arms D are provided at their end with a pelican-hook H adapted to be maintained in looking position by means of ring K. The pelican-hook H serves to connect arm D with chain E, to the free end of which is fastened hook M.
The fastening chains L for the outside gun-Wale of the life-boat are provided in the usual manner with counterthread bolts for stretching the same.
When the boat is to be lowered, the ring K is pulled down, thereby disconnecting arm D from chain E, whereupon arms D with the stools A are swung down and the boat is free. The outside fastening chains may be slipped off by tilting the boat now hanging in the ropes.
I claim In a fastening device for life boats, stools for gripping the keel of the boat, rotatable upper cross shafts on which said stools are mounted, radial arms at the inner ends of said shafts, hooks for gripping the gun-Wale of the boat, and means comprising a pelicanhook for connecting the aforementioned hooks with the free ends of said arms when the same are in a vertical position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL VOIGT BODOM.
