ADJUSTABLE VALVE-SEAT FACER.
Specification of Letters Patent. l P t t 0, 1 2
Application filed March 17, 1919. Serial No. 283,205.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HQ'ERNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles'and State .of Cali'fornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Valve- Seat Facers, of specification. I I I My object is to make an adjustable valve seat facer and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown described and claimed. f
which the following is a Figure l is a fragmentary section of-aninternalcombustion engine showing an adjustable valve seat facer embodying the principles ofmy invention in use the facer being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation upon an .en-. larged scale of the facer shown in F ig. 1, the upper and lowerends of the stems being broken away toeconomize space.
detail of the facer head Fig. 3 is a vertical diametrical sectional i the view be ng taken upon the line 3 -3 of Fig. 1 and looking in the directioii indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a top Y direction. indicated by t e arrow 4 inFig/3.
Fig. 5 is a'diametri on the lines 55 of Figs. 2 and .6.
Fig. 6 is. a horizontal 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a view analogouspto F ig. 5 and taken on the lines 77 of/lfi 'igs. 6 and 8.
Fig. 8 is a top plan view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 9 is a bottom plan view looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 9 in Fig. 2.
A facer head 1 is shown in detail in Fig. 3 and in Fig. 4 and the head is formed and machined from a solid circular piece of suit,- able steel. A base 2 is round in bottom and top plan and fiat in diametrical cross section and has a screw threaded opening 3 extending upwardly from its lower faceand. a larger screw threaded opening 4 extending downwardly from its upper face, said open ings 8 and 4 being in line.
A straight peripheral face 5 of the head is considerably Iargerthan the peripheral face of the base 2, there being an inclined face (3 connecting the lower end of the face 5 to the upper end of a face 7 of the base 2.
Radial slots from the upper fiat face 9, the bottom of the slots forming the upper face 10 of the base riphery 5,
upper end with the face 17, A ,19' extending upwardly and outwardly from plan fiew looking in the the face 17, an inclined bearing face .r'parallel with al sectional detail-as section on the line; 1
8 are formed across the head 9 '2. The slots 8 are evenly spaced apart and preferably there are eight slots radiating from the'center. A bore .11 is formed downwardly from the face 9 concentric with the periphery 5 and in line with the screw threads 3 and l and concentrictherewith,
' said boredlextending straight downwardly slightly beyond the lower edge of the peand there being an inclined face 12 extending downwardly and inwardly from the lower end of the straight portion of the bore 11, and a straight face 13 eX- tending downwardly from the lower end of the face 12 through the face 10 of the base, said face 13 being slightly outside of the of the screw threads 4. n opening 14 is tapped downwardly from the face 9 substantially at the center ofeach of the housings 15 between the slots 8. F aoer cutters 16 are mounted in the slots 8. Each cutter is made from a straight flat piece of suitable steel and has a lower edgel7 resting upon the face 10 at the bottom of the slot,'a-straight face 18 parallel an inclined cutting face the face 19 extending downwardly and inwardly from the face 18, and vertical faces 21 and 22.
slightly higher than the housings 15, and the cutting face 19 extends slightly beyond the face .6 of the head 1.
A clamping annu'laij. ring fits upon the faces 18 of the cutterslnn opposition to the face 10 of the base, and clamping screws 24 are inserted downwardly throughthe clamping plate 23' plate'23 in the form of an The cutters fit closely in the slots and are u into thetapped holes 14. The clamping plate 23 has radial slots 25 extending from its inner edge so that each section of the clamping plate is free enough to operate independently of the other sections when thescrews are operated. The slots 25 are directly above the cutters but are much narrower than the cutters so that any one cutter is controlled by two of the sections 26 between the slots 25. a
An operating stem 27 has a wrench seat 28 upon its. upper end for receiving a handle 29 or a bit stock brace or the iii-1e. I The extreme lower end of the stem 27 is screwed into the threads and jammed out enough to hold during the operation of the tool. Screw threads 30 fit the screw threads is screwed upwardly the only extending a short distance upon the stem. A. neck 31 is formed above the screw threads 30 by' reducing the stem, and then screw threads 32 extend upwardly from the neck 31 a considerable distance. The stem 27 is reduced in size above. the threads 32. An expanding head 33 is screwed upon the threads 32 and has a beveled face 34 upon its lower end extending through the clamping ring 23 and engaging the beveled faces 20 upon the cutters so that as the head 33 is screwed downwardly the cutters. are moved outwardly and so that as the head 33 tters may be moved inwardly.
The inner end faces'21 of the cutters may pass into the spaces formed by reducing the stem to produce the neck .31. words, at the start the cutters may be set with their inner end faces 21' against thev neck 31.
A wrench seat 35 is formed upon the upper end of the head 33 for manipulating the head.
A pilot stem 36 has ascrew thread 37 upon its upper end to fit the screw thread 3 and a shoulder 38 below the screw thread to jam against, the lower face of the head 1. The pilot stem 36 is adapted to extend downwardly through a valve opening 39 and fit in the valve stem bearing $0 so' as to center the facer relative to the 'valve seat to be faced while the tool is in operation.
The operation is obvious. -T he engine casing ll has a plugged opening &2 directly above a valve seat 4-3, and when it is desired to face the valve seat 43 the plug is removed from the opening 42, a pilot stem 36 is selected which will lit the bearing 40 and the selected stem is placed in position by screw lng into the threads 3, then the tool is inserted downwardly through the opening 42 with the pilot stem 36 in the bearing 40, and the tool may be operated in various ways, as by the handle 29 or a brace or the like.
The stems 36 are to be made up in sets so that a stem may be selected to fit the bearing 40 of the engine to be operated upon. for instance, one valve stem bearing may be half an inch and. another five-cighths of an inch, etc.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
