TURBET-TOOL HOIIZLDERv f u Application filed October 24, 1924;. v Serial No. 745,683.
T0 all wiz-0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERBERT BEAUMONT DAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, inthe county vof llVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turret-Tool I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention is an improvement 1n turret tool holders. i
An object of this invention is to provide a turret tool holder so designed and constructed as to hold a plurality of standard tool bits, ground for different operations by the operator, and to permit accurate and quick presentation of the tools tothe work in their proper order.-
With thisy and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be fully described and claimed.
A full and complete understandingof the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
it being understood that the invention is not.
confined to the showing thereof, but may be changed or modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention, as specifically pointed out and claimed. In the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughoutl the several views,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the complete device,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows,
Figure 3 is a side elevation ofthe nut,
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the parts in different relative positions,
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the turret, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary detail sectional 'view thereof.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying draw-- ing, the numeral 1 indicates a supporting metallic shank which may be either supportedupon the carriage of a lathe or be formedas an integral part thereof. rl`he upper vertically extending portion 2 of the vShank 1 is substantially cylindrical andis provided centrally ofone of its faces with a recess 3 vand an aperture l extending from the center of the recess to the opposite face.
`ik cylindrical turret 5 having a central aperture 5a is designed to engage one of the faces of the cylindrical portion 2 and has rigidly secured to it by countersunk rivets turret in operative position with respect to v the shank 1.
Extending from the inner portion of the turret are a plurality of square apertures 1() for receiving standard lathe tool bits 11 which have been ground for different opera tions by the operator. These bits areheld in position by set screws'12 screwed in from `the periphery of the turret and engaging the tool. The outer surface 13 is knurled from its outer edge for part of the radial distance toits inner edge to permit easy ro tation of the turret by hand but has the portion thereof that is overlapped by the head 14 of the bolt 9 smooth to prevent scoring of the under face of the bolt head land to permit facile rotation of the turret 5 when the nut 15 on the threaded end 16 of the bolt has been loosened. p
A. spring pressed pawl pin 17 is disposed within an aperture 18 in the shank- 1 and is held in position by a set screw 19. The free end 2() of the pin is notched to provide a shoulder 21 for engagement with the shoulders 22 on the teeth' 23 of the plate 6.
A. key 24 which preferably is of a Woodruff type has a driving fit with a key seat 25 in the shank of the bolt 9, the key seat 25 being semi-circular in cross section and the key 24 extending radially outward from the bolt shank for engagement with a key-way 26 in the supporting shank 1. The key '24C is driven int-o the seat25 after the bolt has been extended through the bronze hushed assembly of turret 5 'andratchetplate 6 and radially protruding portion of the key slides can be secured tothe supporting shank l through the agency of the bolt 9 and nut l5, and the bolt also will be held against rotation in the bore 4- of `the supporting shank l. A series of spaced apertures are prof vided extending inwardly from the periphery 27 of the nut 15 to accommodate aspanner Wrench for manipulating the same.
The operation of the device is as follows: Suitable ,tools are associated with the turret ,ashassbeen described, and the .nut l5 being loosened, rotation of the turret in one direction is .peilnittedby reason of t-he fact ythat .the'pin 17 `is .calnmed outwardly Vin opposition to lthe ,pressure ,of its spring by the eur-ved portion .of tlre .teeth 23. The turret is rotatcd'zto 4a position as indicated in Figure ,4l when the ,tool .which is Vtobe used is above ,thecenter of ,the Work. The operator then rotates ythe ,turret in arci/.elise direction until the shoulder of the ipin 17 engages the slrioulder ot the appropriate' tooth 23 and prevents Vtiuxther rotation thereof.l The nut zrnrly in lits position.
Having thus fully described the invention,
I claim as new and 'desire to secure by Let- -ters Patent: A
The vcombination with a supporting shank having a substantially cylindrical portion recessed onone of its faces and apertured centrally Aof said recess, of a turret having means for 'supporting a plurality ot radially extending tools, a lratchet plate rigidly secured to the .turret and l,disposed within the said recess, a bushing traversing said turret and plate, a bolt traversing v said bushing and shank with its head', in engagement With t-he outer face of ysaid turret, a nut threaded on .the bolt for maintaining the parts in assembled relation, means preventing rotation of said bolt with respect to Asaid shank, .and means permitting rotation .of the turret in tone direction and preventing continued retation in ,theopposite direction.
