Application filed February To all whom z'zpflmay concern:
Beit known that l, SWAN N. TEVANDER,
` a citizen of the United States, residing in companying drawin Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and usef l Improvement in Container Closures, of which' the following is a specification.
Y .This invention relates in general to containers and has more particular reference to closures for the same. In the present instance it is shown as applied to a can 4no-zzle,`although.it will be manifest, as the' invention is better understood, that it can beaembodied in other forms of closure.
A principal object of this invention is the provision of a can or container closure which will beprovided with a frangible seal and also with an easily operable and tight holding cover adapted to protect the seal in the marketing of the package, and also to forma closure for the can or container after the seal has been broken by the consumer. A
-Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as itis better understood fromv the following description when considered in connection with the acillustrating a pre1 ferre'd embodiment't ereof.
v Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 1s a side elevation of a can or container closure embodying my present invention taken through the body of the can and at one side of the closure;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the' can and parts of the closure aiiixed thereto;
vat
Fig. 3 is an enlarged similar vict;T showinw'the completed closure;
1g. 4 1s a sectionthrough the coverl or' cap; and p Fig. 5 is a section through the blank used in the present embodiment to form the can The nozzle proper, designated at ^A,`is, ositioned onthe top df a can'body pro er to which it is secured by a seam C. he.
` nozzle A is of cylindrical form and is provided near its upper or open end with an indepression or bead 7 toa constitute an internal `:lar Bange disposed just beneath its upp open send. Upon this flange is seated a frangible'ffclosure 8 consisting ofa disk of which is flattene paper, cardboard'or the like which may be Specication of Letters Patent.

down upon the disk 8 and reinforce it when the container 'is inverted, thus permitting a thin and frangible disk to be used if desired. About the depression 10 extends a raised annular'part 11 in which is disposed the curled edge 9. rlhe annular flange 12, which .embraces the outside of the nozzle or can top, extends downwardly from the outer edge of the 'part 11 and 'is provided with an encircling outwardly extending bead 13. A number of slitsy 14, extending verticallyupwardly to and through the bead 13, render the flange 12 elastic or yielding so v that it may be made slightly smaller than .the external diameter of the outer face of rammed aug-(s, ieee.'
aan
thenozzle or can top. This flange isA of such length that its lower ed e 15 is disposed at and slightly. in the epresslon formed by providing the bead 7. In this depression the edge 15 engages by reason ofA the yielding nature 'of the-r parts vof the flange setm by the slits 14:.
This cover may be merely pulled from place when access tothe interior of the conof its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages,
"the form hereinbcfore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1.--A container having a nozzle provided with an inwardly extending flattened head,
a frangible. seal seated on said head, the"n upper edge f said nozzle being curled down thereupon to secure i-t in place, and a slip cover having a .depressed centralportion bearing on said seal and having a {iange engaging the exterior of the nozzle frietionally and removably.
2. A container having an open top, and formed with an inwardly extending bead near the opening of the top; a seal disk resting on said bead; and a slip cover having a depressed central portion 10, a-raisedannular part 11 embracing the edge of said opening, and a flange which engages friotionally and removably "the exterior of the container around said opening.
3. A container having an open top, and bent inwardly near the opening of said top to form an exterior depression 16 and an inwardly extending bead 7 a seal disk sup4` ported on said bead; and a slip cover having a slitted spring Hange engaging in said exterior depression.
et. A container having an open top, and bent inwardly near the opening of said top to form an exterior depression 16 and an inwardlyextending bead 7; a seal disk supported on said bead; and a slip cover engaging on top of said disk and having a slitted spring flange engaging in said exterior depression. y
5. A container having an open top, and an inwardly extending bead beneath said open top, a seal resting upon said bead, a cover having a central portion engaging said seal, and a spring depending flange embracing said top and engaging at its lower edge in the depression formed without said bead.
6. A container having an inwardly bent shoulder, a frangible seal resting thereon, the edge of the container being curled in- Wardly down on said seal to permanently clamp it to said shoulder, and an outer removable and replaceable cover having a central depressed portion bearing on said seal, aI
raised rim portion passing over around Ithe curled edge of the container and a depending flange engaging around the exterior of the nozzle.
7. A container nozzle having an inwardly bent shoulder of Idouble thickness forming an exterior depression, a rangible seal resting on said shoulder, the edge of the container being inwardly bent and clamping the seal permanently in place, and a removable slip cover inclosing said nozzle and formed with a resilient depending lange having means engaging removably in said exterior depression,
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
