HARRY HARDEN, or LONDON, OHIO.
COMBINEDl DOOR HOLDER AND STOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, `1920.
Application led Uctober 6, 1919. Serial lNo. 328,703.
VTo all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY HRDEN, a citizeri of the United States, residing at London, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Door Holders and Stops, of which the following is a specification. n I
This invention relates to door holders. lT he Object is tov provide a devicefor holding swinging doors in open orany other predetermined position, which will become automatically engaged Vtherewith by simply Apressing the doorV lagainst the same, vand which will freely release the said door when suiicient pressure isvbrought to'bear to cause the disengagement of certain cO-acting parts.
Another Objectis to provide such a device with means which, rwhen applied to the ldoor holding device, will cause the latter to permanently hold the door in the aforesaid position, regardless of the amount of pressure exerted against the door to move the 4saine',sai' :l means being readily applicable to ".Fig. 3.is ay or removable from the holding device as desired. l
A' full andl completeunderstanding of the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the following detailed description,
taken in connection withV the accompanying Y,holding doors, and I wish the claims to be so construed.
l-n the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts Athroughout the several figures lligure 1 is a perspectiveview of the improved door holding device shown applied to a door andmholding the latter in open position.
Fig. 2 is vertical longitudinal sectional view ofV the' same. j
horizontal sectionalV view thereof. .y y' Y A Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view ofl` one of the pivoted jaws forming part of the invention. z s' l f Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the holder-'il understood.
, locked relation with a slightly modified form of keeper.
The invention is'applicable to anyv form of swinging door, or element, where it is desired to positively hold the same in Open position or in any other predetermined 'or intermediate position, and to this end comprises a jaw-carrying member A adapted to be secured' to the face of a door a, adjacent to the free edgey of the same, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawing. This awcarrying member A is adapted to co-act with a keeper B in the form of a tubularv post, which is secured in upright position upon the ioor, adjacent to the. baseboard of the room,'if it is desired to hold they door lini i entirely open position, or in any other inter- 'mediate position so as to be engaged with the jaws of the device A, when the door is VswungV upon its hinges, as will be readily,y
The member Acomprises a door-engaging vbracket lincludingupper and lower, spaced ears 2-2, joined at their side edges adjacent to the door a byv short vertical walls 3 3,
provided with outstanding attaching ears L1--4- having their rear faces flush with the rear edges of the upperv and lower ears 2-'2 vso. as to lie'flat therewith against the face of said door. The attaching ears/1 4 are suitably apertured for the reception of screws 5 5, which preferably have their heads countersunk into said lears and serveto securely hold the member in position uponthe door to properly engage'with the'upstand- 'ing post of the keeper' member B.
At a central point adjacent to the duter ends of the ears 2-`2,the.lat ter are suitably ajpiertured for the reception ofV a vertically disposed pivotal post 5a, having its upper and lower endsgupset to prevent its dis# lodgment.
VMounted upon this .post 5 for horizontal swinging action, is pair 'of spring-actuated locking. jaws 6-6,y eachcomposed of sheet y metal bent vvto form an outer wall 7 7 and upper' `and lower walls 8 and: 9respectively. One ofthe jaws is rof. somewhat greater :width than they other, and isA adapted to snugly fit 'betweenthe ears 2-2' and to .l
freely swing between y'the same about the pivotal .post 5l 4 j y width to snugly lit betweenfthe upper and lower walls of'tl1e `first mentioned jaw and to likewiseV swing upon the said pivotal Thet 'other jaw is of a post. The upper and' lower walls8and'9` of each jawV are formed with inner eXtensions 10 having suitable alined lapertures for the reception of the pivotal post, and are also Vprovided with outer extensions 11, comprising spaced ears directed toward the Vco-acting spaced ears of the other jaw andV `provided with alined apertures, located centrally of said ears, for' the reception of pivot pins V12. The inner opposed edges of theseears are `rounded concentrically with the pins 12, and rollers 13 of a radius slightly greater than the radius of the ears,
understood, the only toseparate the outer ends of the said jaws.
The keeper post B comprises a base memare mounted upon the said pins and rotate freely thereon, From these rollers 13 to the outer ends ofthe jaws, the upper and lower walls of the latter are flared outwardly as at letv to form a'gradually narrowing throat or entrance to the rollers, in
order to directA the post B therebetween, as will be readily understood. Y
Immediately'in rear of the rollers 13, the upper and lowerwalls of the jaws are provided with seats 15 into which is adapted to pass the keeper post B, after the same has been forced between vtherollers 13.u
A coiled spring 16, having rearwardly eX- .tending terminals 17 is mounted in sur-y rounding relation to the pivotal post 5, the
terminals bearing against `the inner faces of the side walls of the jaws and exerting V,an outward pressure against. thesame toV force the rollers 13 toward eachother, so as to cause them to hugaround the keeper I'. VB. At the same time, the coiled spring 16 holds the inner ends of the jaws against the inner faces of the shortvertical walls 3-3, and the jaws. may not be moved in either direction together, as
action possibleY being ber 18 having a plurality7 of apertures for the reception of screws'lQ for securing the same to a Hoor. The post B is furthermore provided with a centralvertically disposed borer20, into which isyadapted` to beA inserted one arm 21 of a U-shaped member or staple 22, which is adapted to` act as a Vlocking means for the jaws, as the two arms 21 'of the memberare spaced a suiiicient distance apart to allowy one ofthe same to lie .against the side wall Lof one or the other of .the jaws when the other arm 2l is inserted in the bore of the keeper post B.. It will thus be seenV that the two jaws are effectually prevented from disengagement .from the Y post B when the locking member is in posi- .tion, even though excessive pressure be K brought tobear against theidoor. In Fig. 5, a slightly .modified form of keeper. is shown, the jaw carrying member being preciselyl as already described, In this form the tubular post22a is integrally connected at the top Va ndbottom with laterally extendingv Y arms, '2S-23 having oppoyears and ay pivot pin connecting will be readily Y vice has'been provided whichmay be easily appliedto-a door and floor in any desired position. andythat Athe locking means is readily inserted or applied and as easilyand lquickly detached when it is desired to permit ofthe door being automatically held or released. c r
