IMPROVEMENT IN GRIPlNG-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,798, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. HALLEFAS, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Griping Tongs, of which the following is a specification This griping-tongs is intended for use in building ironpans, boilers, ships, 85o. and is so constructed as to enable it to lie up close to its work on flat surfaces when screwing on or removing bolts and nuts, or griping bariron. It consists of a massive upper jaw or frame, havin g a bracing-screw in its lower end, and a lower jaw, which slides within the upper jaw on arms or trnnnions which support it, said lower jaw being braced up against the object by the bracing-screw, rendering the tongs very strong and convenient to handle, and giving it many advantages over the ordinary tongs, in which the jaws are lapped one over the other, with a headed bolt and nut for its pivot, tending to weaken the tongs and prevent its close approach to its work.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents an elevation of the griping-tongs; Fig. 2, an edge view of face; Fig 3, a sectional elevation; and Fig. 4, a transverse section on line a a.
B is the upper jaw or frame of the tongs, and O is the bracing-screw in the lower end of said jaw for bracing the sliding jaw D up to the object tobe held between the jaws. This sliding jaw D is provided with arms E E, which slide in the slots F F in the upper jaw, and support the sliding jaw when in action.
What I claim is The frame or jaw B, in combination with the bracing-screw O, sliding jaw D with arms E E, and slots F F, constructed, arranged, and operaiing substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 17th day of October, 1872.
WILLIAM J. HALLEFAS.
