Description

Patented 1an.'14, 1873.
Lounges.
F. KRATER.
vNo,
NITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
FREDRIG KRATER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOUNGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 134,752, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIC KRATER, of the city of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Lounges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference had thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a bed-sofa so that the frame of its seat shall inclose and cover the mattress of the base, the front rail of the frame of the seat beingprovided with two ornamental pendants, which prevent the seat from moving endwise, the under side of the seat at its back edge furnished with two pins, ywhich prevent the seat from moving forward off its base, said pins being also used for locking the back edge of the seat to the front feet of the sofa when used as a bed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and its operation. l
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specication, Figure 1 represents a top View of the detached seat, arranged with relation toits base so as to form a bed; Fig. 2 represents the detached seat and its base in juxtaposition for forming a sofa; and Fig. 3 is a vertical and transverse section of the same at line Y, Fig. 2. a
In the accompanying drawing, reference being had to the letters marked thereon, A represents the back of the sofa. B'represents the upholstery of the seat. C represents the front rail of the frame of the scat; D, the feet of the sofa; e, the two ornamental pendants on the lower side of the front rail, and are used for the purpose of forming a finish of the front feet D, and also for preventing the seat from moving endwise when on its base, and also answers the purpose of feet when the seat is used for forming a bed. f represents the upholstered seat of the baseof the sofa; g, the back feet of the sofa; h, pins on the under side and back edge of the frame of the seat, and used for the purpose of preventing the seat from-moving forward oli' its base.
When the seat is removed oif its base and 'placed in position for forming a bed, the back edge of the frame of the seat rests upona portion of the feet D upon which a portion of the front rail rests when in sofa forni, the pins h entering openings in the top of feet D, thereby locking the frame of the seat to the base of the sofa.
It will be observed that the depth of the front rail C, in connection with the ornamental pendants e, is sufficient to bring the upholstery of the seat B on a plane with the upper snrface of the mattress f, so as to form a bed of uniform surface.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim of my invention is- The detachable frame c, provided with pendants e and pins h, used in combination with the base of the sofa, as hereinbefore described, and for the purposes set forth.
FREDRIG KRATER.
