BELTING FABRIC,
Specification of Letters Patent.

cation.
An objectionable feature of the cotton duck belting in common use is the tendency of the material to stretch, so that repeated adjustment is necessary; also, the scarcity of cotton and the advance in cost have made the discovery of a practical substitute for part A or all of the cotton fiber used an important consideration.
To fill a stitched cotton duck belt, by placing a piece of burlap within the layers of duck, is a fairly well known expedient, but it has not been successful owing to the difference in stretch and shrinkage between the two materials, the tendency of the cotton to stretch and shrink being excessive, while the burlap, which is of hemp or jute, is almost completely without elasticity or shrinkage.
The object of the present invention is to produce a cheaper beltas compared to the all-cotton product, and one which is at the same time of improved quality, in ithat while it retains a certain amount of elasticity, which is desirable, excessive stretch is eliminated. This is accomplished by introducing into the fabric a considerable proportion of hemp or jute fiber, so arranged that the difference inquality as to elasticity has no harmful effect; on the contrary, the use of the coarser and harder fiber in this way decreases the stretch, leaving only such elasticity as is beneficial and otherwise results in a better and more permanent product.
To avoid the difficulties hithertofore encountered due to the difference in shinkage and stretch, I lay the cotton fibers in the direction of the length of the belt, and the harder fibers transversely-'z'. 6., in weaving the material I use a cotton warp and a hemp woof, or filling. In this connection it should be understood that in the stretching of a fabric of soft fiber there is a considerable amount of give or yielding of the trans verse threads as well as of the longitudinal threads, and the substitution of a harder fiber for the soft weft increases'the resistance of the fabric and reduces its elasticity. 1 In the accompanying drawing I have shown a stitched fabric belting, made in accordance with my invention, the figure being a cross-section of the belting, taken on a .plane transversely of the length of the fabric.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the piece of belting shown is composed of a strip of fabric 1, having a cotton warp 2, and a hemp'or jute filling 3, the fabric 1 being folded upon itself to form four layers and then sewed through and through forming stitches 4, in parallel rows, extending in the direction of the len th.
What I claim and des1re to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A beltin fabric having a cotton warp and a hemp lling.
2. .A solid woven belting, with cotton warp and hemp filling.
Signed by me at Baltimore, Maryland, this 7th day of May, 1920.
