To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK PITMAN,'a

"subject of the King of Great'Britain, residing at Bulla-Harre, Campbell street, East l'uew, in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, bank clerk, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to the Construction of Rubber Stamps, of which the following is a specification. p

This invention has reference to the con struction of rubber stamps in which'it will be possible to set various headings suchas names and addresses and other matter required to be repeatedly used. The device is.

such that words can be spelled out and quickly set up ready for use and provision is made for more lines than one to. be ar ranged in the appliance.

Means are also provided for lockingrthe matter after it has been set and for adjusting the tension of the endless rubber bands carrying the letters, words, numerals or other marks used in operating the invention.

But in order to fully understand the said invention reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which' Figure 1 is a side elevation of the appliance.

Fig. 2 is a like inside view showing an endless. band on its pulley with the setting wheel and tensioning means.

Fig. 8 shows in perspective view the stamp equipped with about fourteen (14) bands, and v Fig. 4 indicates a single band and method of marking same with letters, numerals, or other marks, in relief.

A suitable container 6 supports stationary spindles 7 in short slots 8 cut longitudinally in the sides of the container to permit of the position of the spindles being altered to adjust the tension of the rubber bands 9 that rest on pulleys 10 that are free to turn on the spindles. Formed integral with the pulleys 10 or otherwise adapted to turn therewith are disks 11 the diameters and positions of which in the container will be such that their peripheries will just come outside the container in which slots are cut for the purpose.

Attached to the spindles 7 are one or two stout rods 12 that come through the container end and are threaded to take the nuts 13 by means of which and the slots 8, the

positions of the spindles 7 .can be altered and the tension of'the bands 9 regulated,

The said bands are endless andare made of rubber preferably lined with linen and each is passed over a pulley 10 at one end and over a bridgeor head piece 1d at the other end the bridge piece being provided with shallow ribs 15 to keep the bands in proper ahnement longitudinally in the device. The pieces 14 extend right across the head'of the stamp parallel with and opposite to associated spindles 7 and are fitted at each end with a downwardly depending lug 15 that is held in position by guide studs 16, which hold the piece in position and render it easy to dismantlethe same when necessary. p

The bridges are fashioned with a curved smooth surface to facilitatethe easy passage over same of the bands 9 as the setting wheels 11 are turned but the curve is slightly flattened at its crown to provide a seat for the letters as same come into line. The bands are cast with the letters of the alpha bet, the numerals and other signs in relief upon it, and with a blank space 17 left between the beginning and the end of the said marks or signs.

In order to insure that the bands shall remain in position after the stamp has been set, I have provided a plate 18 that is hinged to the lid of the container and is provided with slits or openings that come over the type when set and throughwhich the same protrude. The plate is adapted to press upon the bands and to be clasped or other wise fastened to the container when the lines are set and being used, thereby keeping same in place and the letters forming the line or lines of type in proper alinement.

There is a plurality of bands 9 on each of which are the letters and figures indicated and with each band is its pulley 10 and actuating wheel 11. Thenumber of bands employed will depend upon the number of letters or figures to be used in one line. Thus, there may be ten, twenty or more bands on each spindle, according to circumstances,

and each should be long enough to take the alphabet and other marks together with the' blank space 17, that will vary in length according to the position of the band in the device. A convenient form of stamp is that in which there are three spindles and sets of bands, as shown in the drawing, two spmdles being set toward the'end of the container and the third mounted therein near the middle and out of line with the other two, thus making it'possible for the several series of bands to clear each other.

The spindles 7 are preferably threaded at one end and provided with a nut to assist in'assembling the device and for dismantling the same. To further assist in this direction, the lid 19 of the receptacle 6 is hinged thereto and is retained in position by screws 20, the locking plate 18 being hinged to the lid.

spindles 7 are successively rotated to form a line of type upon the bridge 14: if other lines are required same will be formed from the bands upon the other spindles and when all are in'position the plate 18 is brought over and fastened with the letters forming the lines coming through the openings in the I plate. VThus same can be used as a rubber back: the whole system is then moved slightly forward to disengage the bridges 14 and when this has been effected the whole of the parts can be lifted clear.

If required, only one line need be employed but by arranging the spindlesand operating parts in the manner indicated three lines of type can be easily set.
