manner.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1920.
Application filed March 29, 1920. Serial No. 369,457.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HELEN 'F. DOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothesline Couplings; and I do hereby declare the itollowing, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a side view of a clothes-line coupling constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, a plan view of one of the members, detached.
Fig. 3, a plan view of detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in clothes-line couplings. Clothes lines are often arranged over a pulley adjacent to a the other member,
- window and over a pulley fixed to a pole at some distance from the window, and usually the ends of the line are knotted together. It frequently happens that the runs of the line become twisted, or the clothes suspended on the lower run are blown over the upper run, which makes it desirable to separate the ends of the line to facilitate clearance, but to hold the lines and at the same time untie the knot is a difficult operation. The object of this invention is to provide a simple con" pling in two parts, one attached to each end of the line by which the ends may be readily connected or disconnected, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as shown, I employ two coupling members 1 and 5 respectively formed with sockets 6 and 7 through which the ends 8 and 9 of the clothes line extend, the ends being knotted to pre vent withdrawal. The member i is in the iform of a plate which may have rounded edges 10 and 11 if desired. In this member is a longitudinal slot 12 and a transverse slot 13 near its inner end, opening into a longitudinal slot 14 and the longitudinal slots 12 and 14c are connected by reversely turned diagonal slots 15 and 16. The other member 5 is head 18 which is offset from the plane of the main portion of the member 5. The width of the head 18 corresponds to the length of the portion 12 oi the slot in member 1, so that it the members are turned at right angles to each other, the head 18 may be inserted through the slot 12, and be moved through the slots 15 and 16 to the slot 14.- irom which it may be turned into the slot 13, the inner corners of the slot 14 being rounded to give clearance for the neck to enter the slot 13. The members are then turned into line with each other and the head 18 will rest upon the face of the member 1, and as the parts cannot be separated without reversing the movement just described, it is obvious that they are not liable to become accidentally detached but may be readily separated when occasion requires.
I claim v 1. A clothes-line coupling comprising two members each formed with a socket, with which the ends of a clothes-line may be connectedone member formed with a longitudinal slot and a transverse slot connected by an unalined slot, and the other member formed with a neck and a head adapted to enter the longitudinal slot and be moved into the transverse slot, whereby the two members are coupled together.
2. A clothes-line coupling comprising two members each formed with a socket, with which. the ends of a clothes-line may be connected, one member formed with an entrance slot and with a transverse locking slot shorter than the entrance slot, and with a slot intersecting the said entrance and looking slots, and the other member formed with a neck and a head adapted to be inserted into the entrance slot and moved into the locking slot, whereby the two members are coupled together.
In testimony whereot, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
