Be it known that I, PHIRozEsHAW MUN- CHERJI MEHTA, a subject of the Emperor of India, residing at Poona, India, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rifles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rifles and is applicable to the modern repeating rifle and provides a device for catching spent cartrjldge cases as they are ejected from the r1 r As hitherto constructed the magazine of the rifle ejects the empty shells and throws them on the ground whence they have to be picked and collected by hand involving time and labor besides causing the loss of a certain number of shells.
My present invention provides a simple but efficient device for automatically collecting the spent cartridge cases without any labor or attention on the part of the soldier or oflicer using the rifle. V
The invention consists of a receptacle which can be attached to the stock of the rifle along side of the loading gap said receptacle having an opening, and so disposed as to catch the shells as they are ejected; a second opening may also be provided to permit of the receptacle being emptied of the accumulation of spent cartridge cases.
The invention is represented in the nexed drawing in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
Fig. 1 shows part-of the stock a of a rifle in dotted lines to which the receptacle 6 is attached by means of the sliding fastening 0 one member of which is fixed with screws to the stock, and other member to the receptacle. A second opening is provided for the removal of the spent cartridges said opening having a sliding cover 0. deflecting plate (Z is also provided to insure that the cartridges enterthe receptacle.

The receptacle as shown is preferably of strong wire gauze reinforced at the edges and joints with strips of sheet metal, or it may be made collapsible of leather or cloth, supported on a wire frame, jointed so as to fold into a reduced space for facility of transport.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device for catching spent cartridges cases as they are ejected from a rifle, comprising in combination, a receptacle having an opening a deflecting plate secured to the said receptacle adjacent the opening, and means for fastening the receptacle to the rnmoznsnaw MUNGHERJI MEHTA, or POON'A, INDIA.

A device for catching spent cartridges as they are ejected from a rifle comprising in combination a receptacle having an opening therein and slidable fastening means for securing the receptacle to the rifle permitting saidreceptacle to be moved lengthwise along the rifle into and out of a position adj acent the point of ejection of the cartridge cases.
3. A device for catching spent cartridge cases as they are ejected from a rifle, comprising in combination a receptacle having an opening, means. for fastening the receptacle :to the rifle with said opening ad acent the point of ejection of the cartridge cases, a second opening in the receptacle for removal of thecartridge cases therefrom, and a cover for said opening.

A device for catching spent cartridge cases as they are ejected from a rifle, comprising in combination, a receptacle having an opening, a deflecting plate secured to the receptacle adjacent the opening, means for fastening the receptacle to the rifle with the opening adjacent the point of ejection of the cartridge cases and the deflecting;
plate above the point of ejection and slidable fastening means for securing the receptacle to the rifle permitting said receptacle to be moved lengthwise along the rifle into and out of a position adjacent the point of ejection of the cartridge cases.
5. A device for catching spent cartridges as they are ejected from a rifle, comprising in combination a receptacle having an open ing for ingress of the said cartridge cases, an opening for the egress of the cartridges, a cover for said egress opening and slidable fastening means for securing the receptacle to the rifle permitting said receptacle to be moved lengthwise along the rifle into and out of a position adjacent the point of ejection of the cartridge cases.

A device for catching spent cartridges as they are ejected from a rifle comprising a metallic gage receptacle, an opening in the receptacle for the ingress of said cartridge cases, a deflecting plate secured to the receptacle adjacent the said opening, a second opening in the receptacle for the removal of the cartridge, a sliding cover for said opening and slidable fastening means for securing the receptacle to the rifle per- 10 mitting said receptacle to be moved length:
