GEORGE BQ KNIGHT, OF GAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
HEAD-GUARD ATTACHMENT FOR CAPS. Y
To all whom it may-concern:
1 Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, `have invented a new and useful Head-Guard Attachment for Caps, of which the following is a specification- Y Y My invention consists of an attachment for a cap designed to protect thewearer thereof from injurious blows due to objects falling thereon.
It consists also of means for insulating said attachment so that electrical wires orA vother devices of electric transmission which mayv come in contactwith said attachment will be prevented from shocking the wearer of the cap.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the im-l .20
portant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention iis not limited to the specic de tails' shown and described, as long ras they are within the spirit or scopelof the claims.
Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of a cap and the attachment therefor -embodying .my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a top plan View of the attachment, anda portion of a cap to which it is applied. f,
-Fig. 3 represents a perspectiye view partly broken away of a portion of the attachment.

1 designates a capof ordinary construe-- tion, 2 designates a: guard for protecting the head of the wearer 'of the cap from injuriousA .blows occasioned by bolts, or other articles dropping from above in a factory or elsewhere, and striking the guard and consequently the head of the wearer, said guard extending across the underside of the top of the crown portion of the cap and being somewhat of the form of a sack consisting of the bottom piece 3 of fabric, and an inturned et at the-,top of the periphery thereof. In said sack is placed a pad 5 of wire net or mesh, or other suitable material of substantially or relatively rigid material, therim 6 unitlng the peripheral portion of said net or mesh, thus strengthening said .net or mesh. In said sack is placed also a mat 'Z of steel fiber, wool, asbestos or other pliable material somewhat elastic and not liable to be affected by heat, which latter oth- Specication of Letters Patent.

erwise would be communicated to the cap, sail mat forms a yielding cushion for said pa The mat is placed on the bottom piece of the sack and the pad -is seated on said mat, and the peripheral portions of the pad and mat are `placed in the peripheral space of the sack between said bottom piece and the peripheral rim 4, and so the'guardI is retained in the sack assisted by suitable stitches of wire, thread, etc. The sack is rested under the top portion of the crown of the hat and sustained therein.
Depending from the periphery of the sack .and secured thereto is vthe rim 8 which is ada ted to -embrace the peripheral portion 9o the crown of the cap, and the exterior of the band 10 of the c ap to which band said rim may be secured by stitches or other means, thus holding the guard inv position on the cap.
11 designates a cover for the guard, the same beingformed of suitable fabric or other materialand adapted to conform to the form of the crown of the cap, it inclosing the guard and concealing the same without .interfering with the operation of the guard, it being seen that the pad and mat vform a cushion in the sack which in the v4event of articles dropping on the guard will revent the blows or force from striking the ead of the` wearer through the crown, the pad being of open work or mesh and being sufficiently strong to prevent th same from being broken through by said articles without being materially heavy, .while the mat portions of which mayenter the` interstices of the pad owing to its pliable nature, forms a yielding cushion on which said pad isimposed and so receives any blow to whichvthe latter may be subjected, the material of which the mat is composed being also of a nature that prevents the heating of the crown of the cap.
Imposed on the top of the pad and passing under the top rim i of the sack is the sheet or piece 12 of insulating material which may continue from the periphery of the sack downwardly around the periphery of the crown of the cap to the exterior of lll) 11 will prevent the-current or shocks from .terial onwhieh said :padis imposed, anda
i and to be fitted tothe orownof thelcap, said `f sack having a depending rim Which is adapt-- reaching the head of the wearer; The mesh or open like structure ofthe pady andthe loose but intermixed nature of themat are not heavy in their natures, the leffeot of which is evident. 4'
Havingthus described my invention p I claim as new anddesire to secure byL'etters Patent, is l Y 4 Y l. A head guard for a of a base pad of mesh or open likestructure of portion ofthel cap.r r
sack adapted tocontain said amat* and pad and'tolbe fitted to thecro'vvn` of the Cap. y
3. A head guard for,` `a-cap Vconsisting of a saekaflaptedk to contain said mat and pad ed to be fitted around the side of said crown.
4. A head guard for a cap consisting ,ofI` a pad of mesh oropen-likestructure of rela-v` l material, and a rim therefor, a
mat ofhpliable material on which said pad is imposed, and a sack adapted to contain said .mat and pad and to conform to the crown of "a cap towhieh it is secured and to inclose said rim.
Ahead guard for a cap "consisting of a V.padoi' vmesh, @lippen-like structure of relatively rigid material, a'rim therefor, a mat of pliable materia-l on which said pad is imposed; asack` adapted to contain said mat and pad and". to- Conform` tothe eroWn of` a cap tojvwhichfit is secured, anda cover for saidguardlfattaohable to `the cap. t y t 6.l A head guard for ya cap Consisting vof a i pad of meshi orvopen-l'ike structure of relativelyifrigid materiaha matof pliable material on which said padiis imposed, a sack adapted to contain said'fmat and, pad, said guard being attachable to the, cap, and a cover for said in ,thecapi Y t a pad ofl mesh or` open-likelstructure of relatively rigid material, a". mat 4.of pliable,
