Be it known that I, Gus'rnvn LIDsEEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever Operating Mechanism for Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention, relates to an improved form of an oil can wherein a lever operated oil ejecting mechanism is mounted within the cap of the oil can to force oil out of the oil can spout under direct pressure by actuation of the lever, said forcing out of the oil being accomplished independently of any operation of the oil can base.
It is an object of this invention to oonstruct an oil can having an ejecting mechanism in the cap thereof for forcing oil from the spout of the can under pressure.
It is also an object of this invention to provide an improved oil can adapted to force oil from the spout of the can independently of any operation ofthe can bottom.
It is a further object of this invention to construct an oil can wherein a spring controlled ej ecting mechanism is mounted within the lower end of the spout of the can for entrapping oil within the spout and forcing it therefrom under pressure.
It is an important object of this invention to provide an oil can having a removable spout cap thereon, wherein an ejecting mechanism is mounted independently of the can for forcing oil from the can under pressure.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to construct an oil can wherein an eX- teriorly operatable lever controlled ejecting mechanism is disposed within the cap and nozzle of the oil can .for forcing oil therefrom.
It is an important object of this invention to provide an oil can simple and effective in construction, having an exteriorly operatable ejecting mechanism therein for forcing oil from the can, said ejecting mechanism being removable with the spout of the can to permit filling of the can with oil.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

The oil can comprises a can, body portion or container l, having a bottom or base piece of any desired form rigidly secured thereto, by brazing or other means, to afford an air tight joint. rFhe upper end of the can l, is rounded or tapered inwardly to connect with an integral neck or collar 2, the upper margin of which is bent outwardly at right angles to afford a flange 3, having integrally formed on opposite sides thereof, by cutting away portions of lthe flange, curved or arc shaped ears, lugs or quadrants 4L, one end of each of which is in the plane of the iiange 3, while the other end as denoted by the numeral 5, is deflected downwardly, said ears 1, being disposed with the like ends thereof positioned diametrically opposite one another as clearly shown in Fig. 7.

the margin of which is bent downwardly at seated within the inner peripheral groove of the coverplate 8, is a washer or packing ring 12, made of rubber or any other suitable material.
Mounted within the cylindrical cap 6, is an oil ejecting mechanism comprising a cylindrical plunger 13, having disposed a short distance therebelow a disk, plate or head 14, integrally connected or rigidly attached to the plunger 13, by means of oppositely disposed straps or arms 15, thus providing outlet openings 16, between the plunger 13, and the plate 14. Positioned Within the plunger 13, and the'cap 6, withV its lower end seated upon the upper surface of the plate 14, is a spiral spring 17, the upper end of which presses against the inner surface of a shoulder 18, formed at the upper'end of the cap 6, for. the purpose.V
To hold the'ejecting mechanism parts in positionV the plate 14, has formed on its lower surface two parallel ribs 19, one disposed on each side of the center of the plate, to afford a seat for an actuating and supporting arm 20, theV inner end of which is free to slide between said ribs and press upwardly against said lplate 14, while the outer fend Vthereof is curved upwardly and projects through a slot 21, provided in a socket 22, integrally formed by depressing a portion of the cover plateS, at one side of the cap 6, said outer end of the'arm 20, being rigidly secured, by brazing oifotlier means, to a cup or curved member 23, movably seated Vwithin Ythe Vsocket 22 to Vform a non-leaking joint. The springs 17 and 24, are com# pressed an amount suiiicient to permit the force ofthe spring 17, in the normal positionof the force pump as shown in Fig. 3, to hold theplunger plate 14, positioned -belowthe cover plate 8, with the openings 16, Y
affording an outlet for oil from the can e1, into the cap 6,V when the oil can is turned to one side or inverted. To'operate the ejecting mechanism of the oil can from the exc terior of the device a leverV or finger piece 26, has its inner end integrally connected or rigidly secured to the outer side of the cup 23, while the outer end thereof is curved to extend to a convenient position on one side of the oil can.
ln the modified form of the invention disclosed in Figs, 9 and 10, the construction of the loil can is identical with that Vdescribed and shown in Figs. 1 to 8, of the drawings, with the exception that a semicylindrical socket 27, is integrally formed in the cover plate 8, said socket 27 having a transverse slot 28, therein, through which projects an actuating lever or arm 29, the inner end of which is adapted to slidably seat below the plunger plate ofthe device.

hollow cylinder 30, heldin position to afford a non-leaking joint by means of an arched strap 31, the ends of which are rigidly se cured uponthe cover plate 8, said cylinder having apertures therein to permit the le# ver 29, which is suitably bent, to project through one of the cylinder apertures regis-V tering with the slot 28, andout through the other aperture, thus affording aV means for rotating the cylinder A30, by depressing the outer end 'of the lever 29, and thereby raising the inner lend of the lever toV actuate the ejecting mechanism of the oil can.

The lever 26, is now depressed, rotating the cup 23, in the socket 22, and thereby moving the arm 20, in the slot 21, simultaneously raising the inner end of said arm and sliding the same between the ribs 19, thus compressing the spring 17, and forcing the plunger plate 14;, into the cylindrical cap 6, entrapping the oil therein and forcing the same out oil the mouth otl the spout 7, under pressure independently of any flexing of the sides or oit the bottom of the 'oil can.
In the modified form of pump actuating mechanism shown in Figs. 9 and 10,to operate the ejecting mechanism of the oil can, the outer end of the lever 29, is depressed, thereby rotating the cylinder 30, in the socket 27, and moving the central portion of the lever 29, in the slot 2S, to simultancously elevate and slide the inner end of the lever on the lower surface of the plunger plate, thus forcing the same into the oil can cap under pressure to force en trapped oil out of the mouth of the spout, when the oil can is tipped to one side or inverted.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
l claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described a plate, a socket 'formed thereon having a slot therein, a lever projecting through said slot, means on said lever adjustably seated in said socket to al'ord a fulcrum for the lever, and retaining means on said plate Jfor adjustably holding said means in place.

In a device of the class described a socket having a slot therein, a curved member adjustably disposed to seat in said socket, a lever connected with said curved member and projecting through said slot, and means for holding said curved member adjustably seated in said socket to form a non-leaking joint.
In a device of the class described a socket having a slot therein, a lever projecting through said slot, means on said lever adjustably seated in said socket to afford a fulcrum for the lever, retaining means for holding the means on said lever adjustably seated in said sockets, and a mechanism connected with said lever adapted to be operated thereby.

In a device of the class described a socket member having a slot therein, a lever projecting through said slot, a curved membervin said socket member aitording a Jfulcrum for said lever, means adapted to be operated by said lever, a spring engaged in said curved member to hold the same in position to form a non-leaking joint with said socket member, and means for holding said spring in place.
