SWIMMING-GLOVE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,455-, dated August 21, 1855.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DUGALD CAMPBELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful article which I denominate a Swimming-Glove; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciication, which represent a glove made upon my plan.

The nature of my invention consists in uniting the fingers and thumbs of gloves by Webs of any flexible material in imitation of the feet of some aquatic birds, for the purpose of facilitating the act of swimming by increasing the area of the hands when required, the propelling, and sustaining power of the swimmer being rendered more effective by the increased resistance of the Water. To ordinary gloves I add pieces of any suitable flexible material of such sizes, and shape as to fit the spaces between the lingers and thumbs when extended by the wearer.

In action the lingers and thumbs are brought close together when the hands are pushed forward, and are expanded upon the backward and downward stroke, whereby the swimmer is enabled to exert the power of his arms to great advantage as before described.

Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

The use or employment of flexible webs uniting the thumbs and fingers of gloves, constructed and arranged substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
