WITNESSES; INVEN'POR,:
n v W LEVI DAROZIR, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JULES MOB-ISSETTE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT iN MATCH-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,523, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI DAROZIR, of the city and county of Worcester and Common wealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved match-safe, the lid of the delivery-box being shown raised; Fig. 2 represents a central cross-section of the safe, the lid of the delivery-box being shown closed; and Fig. 3
represents a broken or detached part of the safe.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in detail.
In the drawing, A represents the body of the main part of the safe, which is to be made of metal. The material may be tin, sheet-iron, brass, or other similar material, but I prefer to make the safe of cast-iron. The safe is provided with a metal lid, B, having a flange, a, which fits down outside of the front upper edge and also down over the ends ot'the safe. The back of the safe extends up past the back of the cover, while the rear part of the ends of the safe extends up, as shown at b b, so that the cover can be hinged inside the projections b b. A lip, c, is cast on the under side of lid to fit down on inside of front of safe, as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the front lower part of the safe is a delivery-box, 0, having a lid, D. Each end of the safe is also provided with sanded or emery coverings E, upon which the matches may be scratched. Upon the back of the safe is secured a hinged hooking-plate, F, with a hole, 61, for the purpose of hanging the safe up, when desired. upon the side of the wall or partition of the building.
When the safe is arranged upon a shelf the hook-plate F can be turned down, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3.
This safe is designed to furnish a safe place for keeping packages of matches, as well as those separated for daily use. The packages are placed in the large box or receptacle A, while those separated for daily use are placed in the delivery-box 0.
My safe meets with general approval by all classes of the public.
In conclusion, I would state that I do not broadly claim a match safe having separate compartments, the one to contain matches in packages and the other to hold matches which are not inbundles, but are separated and ready to be used. I am aware that this has been done before; but a safe constructed, as is mine, with the whole of the main box to receive the bundles of matches and a comparatively small receptacle for the separated matches afiixed to or formed on the outside of this box, so as to leavethe interior of the box free and unencumbered, possesses manifest advantages on the score both of convenience and of economy over any other safe of the kind hitherto made.
The whole device is cheap and readily manufactured, and access can much more easily and conveniently be had to the separatel matches when held in their receptacle on the outside of the box than would be the case were they contained within the main box, the heavy cover of which it would be necessary to raise each time it was desired to take a match; and, besides, the whole of the space in the box is economized to contain the bundled matches, so that many more bundles can be put in the safe than has heretofore been prac' tica-ble in other safes of the same size designed for a like purpose. Therefore,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved match-safe, consisting of a main box or receptacle, A, for packages and a separate and smaller one, C, for separated matches, the latter being affixed to or formed on the outside of the former, and both being provided with covering-lids, substantially as herein shown and set forth.
LEVI DAROZIR.
