Description

D. B. S'WI'CKARD.
PLIERS.
APPLICATiGN FILED JULY 25,1919.
Patented June 29, 1920.
UNITED STATES, PATENT OFFICE. v
DAN B. SWIGKARD, or GALVA, ILLINOIS.
PLIERS.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, DAN B. SWICKAED, citizen of the United States, residing at Galva, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain newrand useful Improvements in Pliers; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pliers.
The object of the invention is to improve on the construction of pliers as ordinarily produced, simplifying the same and rendering it stronger, besides reducing the cost of manufacture.
Another and important object, however, is to improve upon and simplify the constru'ction of the pliers forming the subject of my pending application for Patent No. 282,182, filed March 12, 1919 as will appear more fully herein aided by the accompanying drawing which forms part of this application, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved pliers, and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
The pliers comprises, first, a jaw 1 and a handle portion 2 having the general form of an irregular curve after the manner of plier construction, and, secondly, it has a companion jaw 3 and a handle portion 4, said jaw 3 having near its fulcrum a notch 5 to receive a wire, nail or other object'to be cut, the said jaw 1 acting therewith to sever such object.
Said jaw 3 has an ear 6 extending from its outer edge. 7 is a thread-bar having one end pivoted to the ear by means of a rivet 8, its other end, which is free, extending through a loop 9 extending from said handle portion 2, as shown, said thread-bar being slidable within said loop in the pivotal action of the jaws. 10 is a nut adapted for adjustment upon the thread-bar as described in my pending application referred to. r
11 indicates a pair of links, one lying at each side of the pliers as clearly shown in Fig. 2, it being observed that the jaws are reduced in thickness near the handle por-' tions as indicated at 12 so that said links and to be parallel to one another.
: Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 29, 192() Application filed July 25, 1919. Serial Nd? 313,365. I l i The rivet 8 serves to pivotally connect the sald thread-bar 7 and the ear 6, as .explalned, besides pivotally connecting said links 11 to said ear. l
The opposite endsof-the links receive a rivet 13 whl'ch extends through both jaws,
the jaw 1 having a snug working fit thereon, while the jaw 3 has an arcuate slot shown in broken lines at 14, which is described from the center of the rivet 8, the rivet 13 swinging therein.
The links 11 support the jaw 1 and rivet 13 and guides the same throughout the slot, it being seen that as the said jaw and rivet can move about the rivet 8 through the links, the jaw 3 likewise moves about that rivet producing a smooth acting tool.
My pliers thus constructed are exceedingly strong and rigid from the fact that the ear 6 is an integral part of the jaw 3,
being forged in one piece with the latter. By this means the thread-bar, when pressure or great strain is placed thereon in, or during certain operations, as in holding or turning a nut, or when the pliers are used as'a pipe wrench, will have a very solid and firm connection that cannot become bent or twisted under extreme and repeated forces.
Moreover, by having straight links, as 11 described, such links are not subjected to strains likely to bend them' or tend to buckle them.
Again, by pivoting the links to the ear 6 at the outer side of the jaw said links are removed from the work-engaging faces of the jaws so as not to interfere with any operations. The jaws are, therefore, entirely free while at the same time ready to act in any capacity with perfect freedom.
The tool is thus thoroughly simplified in construction and reduced in cost of production.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A pliers including its jaws pivotally connected, one of said jaws having an ear extending from its outer edge, a link pivot- 'ed at one end to said ear and at its other end at the pivot of the jaws, a looped portion extending from the handle portion of one of the jaws, a thread-bar pivoted to saidear and slidable within said portion, and a member adjustable upon the threadbar between the ear and said portion.
2. A pliers including its jaws pivotally.
connected, one of said jaws having an ear extending from its outer edge, a link pivoted at one end to said ear and at its other end at the pivot of the aws, a looped portion extending from the handle portion of 10 the said link. i I 3'. A p1iers including its jaws pivotally' connected, one of said jaws having an ear extending from its outer edge, links pivoted at one end at side of the ear, and each pivoted 5 at their other ends to the pivot member of the jaws, a looped portion extending from the handle portion of the opposite jaw, a thread-bar pivoted to said ear and slidable within the said portion, and a member adjustable upon the thread-bar, there being an arouate slot in one of the jaws at its pivot point described from the pivot of the links at said ear.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAN B. SWIGKARD.
