JEwEL-sETriNo T001;
Application filed March 15, 19 23 Seri a1 No.'625,374=.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IGNAZIO GArTI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewel- Setting Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to jewel setting tools and more particularly to a novel and improved flange crimping plier, particularly adapted for setting jewels or gems in rings, bar pins and other kinds of jewelry.
One of the objects of my invention isthe provision of a jewel setting tool especially designed for gripping the flanges of a ring, bar pin or other piece of jewelry, in such manner as to engage a natural or artificial gem including provision for limiting the pressure to be applied during the crimping operation thus permitting the setting of gems with rapidity and with great efliciency. v
Another object of my invention is the provision of a jewel fitting tool in the form of a pair of pliers having an anvil head and a crimping head cooperating with each other to engage the metal of the particular piece of jewelry in which the stones are to be set.
In order to more fully understand my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodimentthereof, wherein,
Figure 1 isa side view showing the application of my invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan,
Figure 3 is an end view of the crimping and anvil head, 7
Figure 4; is a sectional view showing the crimping head and its relation to the setting, and
Figure 5 is a section of a detail or modified form of an anvil head for use on straight work.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates the upper handle and 6 the lower handle of the tool. T heupper handle 5 is preferably formed integral with the slot-ted body 7 being provided at its extreme forward end with an anvil head 9, the top face of which is curved as indicated atlO for a purpose presently to appear. The lower handle 6 is preferably formed integral with the body portion 11, being pivoted as indicated at 12 and terminating in a crimping head 13 for cooperating with the anvil head 10 above referred to.
The lower face of the crimping head is provided with a curved, inverted, V-shaped groove 14, it being observed that the curve of said groove extends from the opposite side 15 of the crimping head 13, more clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawings. The handle 6 is provided with a vertically extending stud l7 and the handle 5 with an adjusting screw 18 and lock nut 19 whereby the tool may be set to the proper position for affecting the crimping of the metal when setting the stones.
The tool above described is particularly adapted for use in setting stones and gems in rings, having the side flanges 20, 21, be tween which the gems or stones 22 are temporarily positioned, preliminary to the crimping of the flanges shown more clearly by Figure 4- of the drawings. The ring proper is usually provided with a Series of spaced apertures throughout the circumference of the ring and between the flanges, cement or any other adhesive is applied so as to temporarily hold the stones or gems in position. After the tool has been set to the desired degree by the mechanic, pressure is applied to the flanges gradually as the ring is turned on the anvil head 10 thus pressing. the metal toward the gem or stone whereby they are crimped very effectively and quickly. The curved portion of the bot-.
tom, grooved face of the crimping head 13' conforms to the curvature of the face 10 of the anvil head and consequently, it will be seen that the flanges are crimped regularly as the handles are pressed toward each other as is understood. In the form of the invention shown by Figure 5, wherein it is desired to crimp the flanges of metal, the crimping head 13 and the anvil head 14 are provided with straight edges at their meeting surfaces to accomplish the same result as above set forth.
While I have illustrated and described my invention withsoine degree of particularity, I realize that in. practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim. 7
of a Straight piece Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure b United; StatesLetters Patent is n A gem-setting tool of the class described 5 comprising pivotally connected handles, one of said handles terminating inan anvil-head, the top face thereof being gradually curved, the complementary handle terminating iira crimping head of substantially the same 10 length as the anvil head saidcrimping head having an inverted V-shaped bottom face shaped to conform to the curvature of the anvil head and adjustable means between the handles for limitingthe pressure of said anvil and crimping heads.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses:
