UNITED lSTATES' PATENT oFFlCE.
BERT HQMTLLYABQD, oF oI-IEYENNE, WYOMING.
LAUNDRY-strlen To all whom t may cono/ern:
Be it known that I, BERTI-I. MILLYARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheyenne, in the county of Laramie and State of lVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laundry- Sticks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to laundry sticks, and more particularly to a device forlifting articles of clothing which are being laundried from a boiler or similar receptacle in which the articles are boiled during the laundrying operation.
Gne of the main objects of the invention is to provide a stick having means Vwhereby slipping of the articles of clothing therefrom when being lifted from the boiler will be prevented thus efl'ectually eliminating danger of scalding of the user when removing the laundry from the boiler, such as often occurs in using a stick of smooth contour such as is commonly used. A further object is to provide a stick having a plu` rality of projecting elements which will act to grip the articles of clothing for removingthe same while being so related to the body portion of the stick as toprevent falling of the articles. A furtherobject-is to provide a stick in which the gripping elements thereof may be readily formed integrally with the stick so as to permit the device to be produced at very small cost. Other objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure l is a side vievT of a laundry stick constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The body portion l of the stick is of substantially cylindrical shape and may be of any suitable or desired length. In forming this stick, one end portion thereof is formed, initially, of greater diameterthan the remainder of the stick, this enlarged portion being also of cylindrical shape and concentric with the body of the stick. larged end portion is then provided with a plurality of annular channels which are equally spaced, these channels extending inwardly to the periphery of the body portion of the stick. A plurality of equally spaced grooves are then cut through the annuli or rings left about the end portion of This en- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 111113,29 1920. the stick by these annular channels, these grooves extending axially of the body 1 ofV the stick. This leaves a plurality of equally spaced radially projecting gripping elements 2 which are disposed in concentric series about the stick, the projections of each series being equally spaced and the projectj l ing members of the different series forming longitudinally extending series of gripping elements. substantially rectangular cross section, but have their outer surfaces curved on an are concentric with the arc of curvature of the body 1` of the stick, and their edges rounded so as to avoid all sharp corners or edges such as would tend to injure or tear the clothing.
In using this stick, the end portion lIl thereof from which project the elements 2 is inserted into the boiler and beneath an larticle of clothing which it is desired to re- These gripping elements are of i move. The stick is then given a slight turn `-so as to wind,'to a slight extent, the article of clothing upon the lower end of the stick thus effectually securing it againstv slipping off as the stick With the article secured thereon is removed from the boiler. In this connection, it is to be notedv that it is not essential that the stick be slightly turned, as the projecting elements 2 tend to engage into the article of clothing so as to prevent slipping thereof, but I prefer to turn the stick in the manner described so as to reduce the possibility of slipping to the minimum. Dueto the fact that the outer portion of the members 2 are slightly rounded, these members may be turned with the stick so as to grip the clothing in the manner described Without danger of causing injury or tearing to the clothing such as Would be apt to occur if the outer faces of the projecting elements were fiat or plane forming relatively sharp corners or edges which would penetrate into the clothing whenthe stick is turned. Also by forming the projecting gripping elements integral with the stick 'and having them disposed in series in alinement axially and circumferentially thereof,
these gripping elements may be formed by parts,V materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- A ters Patent is v In a laundry stick, a cylindrical body and a plurality of radially projectingintegral gripping elements carried thereby and'disposed in series in alinement longitudinally and circumferentially of the body, said gripping elements beingA of substantially rectangular cross section and having the outer faces curved concentric with said body and BERT H. MILL'YARD.
