THOMAS FRANCIS CONDON, OF EAST DORSET, VERMONT.
CLOTHES STICK OR LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,497, dated August 18, 1903.
Application filed April 2, 1902. Serial No. 101,078. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS FRANCIS CON- DON, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Dorset, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Sticks or Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in clothes sticks and lifters; and the'main ob ject of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which can be used to stir clothes while being boiled and which will readily lift the clothes from the boiler without in any manner endangering the person.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a very simple, durable, and inexpensive device for this purpose, thus producing a thoroughly efficient and practical device.
To this end my invention consists of a clothes-lifter embodying novel features of construction, as substantially disclosed herein.
In the accompanying drawing the figure illustrates a side elevation of my improved clothes-lifter.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the handle, which is provided with the head B. This head is provided with the semispherical head 0 and a series of truncated conical sections D, provided with the substantially annular right-angled shoulders E. The breadth of the sections D is a little more than the diameter of the stick or handle, Whereas the smaller breadth thereof or its tapered end is substantially the same diameter of the stick or handle. It will be noted that in the pertions of the stick between the sections 1), I
provide the bulging portions G, and thus provide the stick with a better exterior to grasp 40 the clothes, as the portions D are provided with sharp cornered shoulders E and the sloping surface. Should the portions E fail to grasp the clothes, the sloping surface will allow the same to slide down upon the bulging portions G.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, it will be seen that I provide a clothes-stick which is turned from a single piece of material, although any desired manner of making may be employed.
In using mylit'ter the head is inserted into a Washboiler of clothes, and as the extreme end of the head is rounded the clothes may be stirred or punched without injuring the fabric. To remove the hot wet clothes, the lifter is withdrawn, and as the clothes come in contact with the head of the lifter they are readily lifted from the boiler without danger of their slipping back and splashing scalding water upon the operator.
It is obvious that my invention is of great convenience and is also of a very simple and practical construction.
What I claim is- A clothes-lifter, comprising a handle and a head formed integral therewith, said head having a semispherical end and a series of alternating bulging sections and truncated sections.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS FRANCIS CONDON.
