To all whom it may concern} Y Be it known that I, PERRY resident of Coraopolis, in the county of Allegheny and. State of Pennsylvanla, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Rigging, f whi'ch thefollowing is aspecification. p p p This invention relates to improvement n draft rigging for cars and has for its object to provide a tandemrigging of double the ordinary capacity, or one in which I am enabled to utilize two sets of springs in each half ofgtherigging. The invention consists through the line bb of Fig. 3,-butwith the longitudinal sills and; their abutments made separate instead of integral. 7

Referring now to the details of'the-drawings by numerals: 1 designates the-ordinary end sill of a. car and 2 and 3 designate the draft irons or the intermediate sills. 4: designates. the shank of the ordinary draw bar and 5 and (iv-designate a pair of side bars which are normally adapted to move backward and forward with the coupler parallel with the said sills 2 and 3 ,,the front ends of the side bars 5 and 6 being secured tothe shank of the draw bar upon opposite sides thereof; The forward ends of said plates 5 and 6 are provided with recesses 8 and 9, the top. recesses SI of each sidebar being adapted *to receive the ends of a connecting plate 10 which passes over the shank of the draw bar immediately in front of the usual shoulder 11. This is the onlydifferencebetween the construction shown in Fig. 3 and the modified construction shown in Fig. 5.
In addition to the abutments 22 and 23 at the. forward ends ofthe side bars 5 and 6, said bars are also provided. with ribs 32 running substantially the whole" length ofthe. side bars, and substantially at the center of said side bars 1 form lugs 33 and 341 which are preferably cast integrally with said bars, the ribs preventing buckling of the bars. i
' Immediatelybehind the abutments 22 and 23 of the side bars I place the front follower 40 shown in perspective view in Fig. 7, thisfollower having upper lugs 41 and lower lugs 42 which straddle the side bars 51and 6 and co-act with the front abutments cast on the draft irons 2 and 3.- This follower is also provided with side grooves 43 and 44 into which projects the longitudinal ribs 32 of the side bars 5 and 6. This construction not only assists in securing the front follower in position butaids to prevent'the side bars 5 and 6 from'buc'kling'.

opening 49 being provided in the lower half of the block for this purpose. Theicentral block 45 is made of the peculiar construction I shown in Fig. 8 so as to permit theside bars 5 and 6 'and'their integral lugs 33 to pass between the lugs 46 and 47. ' V the forward follower being designated 52 and the rear follower 53. 'The forward of these two followers 52 is designed to co-act with the front follower 'hereinbefore referred to and these two followers receive the two setsofsprings 54 and 55. Likewise, the
' follower 53 which has been referred to as being immediately behind the central block is designed to co-act with a companion or rear follower 56, shown in perspective view in Fig. 9, the two followers 53 and 56 designed to receive two sets of springs 57 and 58 (see Fig. 2). This rear follower is preferably made of the peculiar construction shown in Fig. 9 and in addition to having grooves 59 and 60 to receive the longitudinal ribs 32 on the side bars 5 and 6, also has dove tail recesses 61 and 62 which are designed to receive similar shaped lugs 63 and 64 cast on the extreme rear ends of the side bars 5 and 6. This rear follower 56 abuts against two stops and 71, the stop 70 being secured to or cast integrally with the draft iron or sill 2 and the stop 71 with the draft iron or sill 3. These stops 70 and 71 have slots or recesses 72 and 73 to permit the rear ends of the side bars 5 and 6 to be moved backward as the draw bar receives an impact. 4 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 3. follower 52 is given its forward movement and the follower 53 its rearward movement by the lugs 32 projecting from the side bars 5 and 6. I
From the foregoing and accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have con structed a draft rigging of great strength and one which comprisestwo sets of double springs on each side of the central block 45 so that Ihave a double tandem rigging.
It will be obvious that changes and modifications may be madein the form and construction of the various parts without de- 106 the shoulder of the draw bar and bridging the space between said side bars.

Ina draft rigging and in combination with the draw bar, a pair of side bars straddling the shank of said draw bar and having abutments forming a pocket into which the shank projects, said side bars and said shank being secured together so that they travel together in each direction,.and a plate coacting with the shoulder of the draw bar and bridging the space between said side bars, said plate and said side bars being constructed and arranged to prevent spreading of said side bars.
5. In a draft rigging and in combination with the draw bar and followers, a pair of side bars straddling the shank of the drawv bar and having abutments located between said shank and the front follower and forming a pocket into which said shank projects said shank and said side bars and abutments moving together in each direction and said abutments moving the front follower rearward as the shank pushes said abutments on an impact, and plates co-acting with the shoulders of said draw bar and securing the side bars together.
6. In a draft rigging and in combination with the draw bar and followers, a pair of side bars straddling the shank of the draw bar and having abutments located between said shank and the front follower and forming a pocket into which said shank projects, said shank and said side bars and abutments moving together in each direction and said abutments moving the front follower rearward as the shank receives an impact, and plates co-acting with the shoulders of said draw bar and securing the side bars together, one of said plates and said bars having respectively dove-tail ends and recesses whereby said plate prevents said bars from spreading.
7. In a draft rigging and in combination with the draw bar and followers, a pair of bars on opposite sides of the followers, said bars havingribs extending longitudinally thereof, said followers being supported by said ribs, whereby said ribs perform the double function of strengthening said bars and supporting the followers.
8. In a-draft rigging and in combination with the draw bar and followers, a pair of bars on opposite sides of the followers, said bars having ribs extending longitudinally thereof and said followers having grooves fitting said ribs, whereby said ribs perform the double function of strengthening said bars and supporting said followers.
' 9. In a draft rigging and in combination with the draw bar and followers, a pair'of bars on opposite sides of the followers,said bars having ribs extending longitudinally thereof, said followers being supported by said ribs, and said bars having projections co-acting with the followers to move the same to compress the springs.
10. In a draft rigging and in combination with'the'draw bar and followers, a pair of bars on opposite sides of the followers, said bars having ribs extending longitudinally thereof and said followers having grooves fitting said ribs, whereby said ribs perform the double function of strengthening said bars and supporting said followers.
11. In a draft rigging and in combination withthedraw bar and followers, a pair of 7 bars on opposite sides of the followers, each bar having abutmcnts forming a pocket for the shank of the draw bar and receiving the blow direct from said shank, a longitudinal rib, a central projection, and a rear lug.
12. In a railway draft rig ing, the combination with draft irons, front and rear main stop acting means; of a centrally located plate extending between the draft irons; cooperating means on said plate and draft irons arranged for detachably locking said plate with the draft irons to prevent relative lateral separation therebetween; longitudinally extending side bars detachably connected to the draw bar, said plate being recessed at its ends adjacent the draft ironsv and within which recesses said side bars are adapted to slide back and forth; front and rear main followers and front and rear intermediate followers, and cushioning means between the sets of followers, said cushioning means and followers extending above and below said side bars.
