To all whom it may concern:

Be'it known that I, CHARLES Loms BAL- DAUF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of West Hoboken, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders. of which the following is a specification.

- My invention relates to the art of binders for ose-leaves, such as are commonly emplrzlyed in lodgers, dictionaries and encyclope 1as. I

The principal object of my invention is to provide an improvement on the arrangement of my Patent No. 1,071,500, whereby the two cover members of the binding, al-

though made inte ral with a back portion as in the usual boo binding, maybe laid out flat on a plane surface and reassembled again with maximum convenience.

A second object of my invention is to provide an improved arrangement of binder whereby a portion of the leaves may be removed and replaced again with the maximum of convenience when it is desired to remove or insert a leaf.

The novel features of my invention are pointed out with particularity in the appended claims, but the invention itself, together with further objects and advantages, will best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a. perspective view of a binder according tom invention with the leaves inserted and loc ed therein and illustrating also the spanner by which the device is locked and unlocked.

{is indicated in Fig. 1,- my binder comprlses covers 1 and 2 connected by a back 3.. Fixed'to the back 3 parallel to and adjacent the lines along which it is connected'tothe covers 1 and 2 are binding bars 4 and-5, respectively, said bars being longer than the back 3 and their ends being bent at right angles so that they may be made to overlap. Bar 4 terminates at each end in pairs of spaced fingers 6, 7 8 and 9, the'fingers 6 and 8 being shorterthan fingers 7 and 9. The ends of bar 5 have threaded apertures therein for receiving screws such as 10, whose heads are adapted to clampthe fingers 6, 7, 8 and 9 to hold the bars 4 and 5 1n the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

. The ends of the fingers of each pair being disconnected, the b0 ies of screws 10 can readily slip intothe slots between the fingers. Moreover, the fact that fingers 7 and 9 are longer thanfingers 6 and 8, enables aperson reassembling the device after it has been opened to readily engage the bodies of the screws 10 by the projecting ends of fingers 7 and 9 so as to guide the screws between the pairs of fingers. This action is facilitated also by the arrangement shown, in which the longer fingers 7 and 9 are on the side of bar 4 adjacent the back -3. I findthat I can readily adjust the parts into the position for locking when holding cover 1 by one hand, without needing to guide the fingers on the pins by the other hand.

I prefer to provide the bars 4 and 5 with cooperatin projections and hollow headed pins 11 and 12 respectively, similar to those shown in my said prior patent for holding the leaves in place in the binder.

For convenience in removing and replacing sheets which are not to be changed at the time of replacing a sheet or inserting one, I provide a bar 13 having apertures 15 therein, arranged to pass overthe ends of pins 12, and having pins 14 fixed thereto and adapted to project through the sheets to be bound, the sheet bein provided with 9. ertures to accommodate oth sets of pins. he bar 13 and its pins 14 permit part of the loose sheets to be separated from those on pins 12 and laid to one side without danger of the sheets removed sliding relatively to one another to bring the apertures therein out of alinement. The action of pins 14 in maintainin the removed sheets in' their original re ative positions is clearl illustrated in Fig. 3. It will be seen t at the ends of ins 14 can be reinserted in the holes provide therefor in the sheets remaming on pins 12, and that thereupon the sheets on pins 14 will slide back onto pms 12 without indrance. The binder can then be reassembled as previously described and the parts locked 1n place.

The remainder of the parts of the device shownin Figs. 5 and 6 are as previously described in connection with Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. In a'loose leaf binder, a frame comprising two members normally disposed oppositely and one of which has a eaf holding pin thereon, the ends of said members being bent so as to overlap, one of said ends bein formed with spaced fingers of unequa length, and the end adapted to overlap said fingers having clamping means thereon, a part of which is adapted to slide between said fingers.

2. In a loose leaf binder, in combination a pair of covers, a back secured thereto, two members connected to said covers and back and normally disposed oppositel one of said members having a leaf hol ding pin thereon, the ends of said members bein bent so as to overlap, one of said ends ieing formed with spaced fingers of unequal length, and the end adapted to overlap said fingers having clamping means thereon a part of which is adapted toslide between said fingers, the longer of said fingers lying The binder is shown only,

4. A loose lea binder comprising in combination a frame includin two members normally disposed oppositefy one of which has a set of leaf holdlng pins thereon, a back to which said members are connected, said members having ends arranged to overlap when in normal position, the ends of one of said members being formed with spaced fingers, the ends of the other of said members havin clamping means thereon arranged so t at a part may pass readily into and out of the space between said fingers, and a bar having apertures adapted to receive said pins and having additional pins .fixed thereon arraiilged to extend through leaves held b' said rst mentioned pins.

5. A loose leaf binder comprising in combination a frame includin two members normally disposed op osite y'one of which has a set of leaf ho dingv pins thereon, a back to which said members are connected, said members having ends arranged 'to overlap when in normal position, the ends'of one of said members being formed with s aced fingers and the ends. of the other 0 said members having clamping means thereon arranged so that a' part may pass readily into and out of the space between said fin gers, a bar having a ertures adapted to receive said pins and aving additional pins fixed thereon arranged to extend through leaves held-by said first mentioned pins, one of said first mentioned vpins being'threaded, an apertured bar throu h which said pins extend, and a nut on said threaded pin for holdin said bar in juxtaposition to leaves on sai pin.
