, Vises, oi' which the following is a Speccation.
This invention relates to quick. acting vises and has for its object to provide in a lvise improved means .for rapidity in connecting the operating mechanism with kthe moving jaw, and also improved means for operating the moving jaw at a throw or the lever, -in either direction.
lV ith these and other objects in view the device comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The improved vise which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a base 15 of substantiallyl the usual and ordinary type adapted to be secured to a bench or other fixed object in the usual manner by inserting bolts through the ears 16. Upon the disk 17 a housing 18 is erectedy providing space for the passage therethrough of the beam 19 of the movable jaw 20. Upon each side the beam 19 has countersunk therein a rack plate 21 and through the beam and the rack plates 21 a slot 22 is provided vfor the purpose hereinafter described.
Within the housing 1S clutch members 23 are located having teeth 24 positioned and proportioned to engage the teeth of the rack bar 21. The end of' the clutch member adjacent the teeth 24 is drilled to receive a spring 25 and a slot 2G is provided to receive the inclined or cam extremity 27 ot the spring k2S, such cam extremity bearing against the spring 25 so that there is double spring action provided by 4the springs 25 and the springs 28. ,kreferably, though, not necessarily, these clutch members 23 with their accompanying springs 25 and 28 are located upon opposite sides of the beam 19. Such use of two clutch members insures equality of action and avoids binding of the parts. '1`he ends of the clutch members 23 opposite the teeth 24 bear against cams 29 formed integral with the shaft 30 which at its extremities is provided with multi-angular portions 31 to receive a lever 32 which may be placed upon either end of the shaft 30 as occasion may make desirable. r1`he slot 22 in the beam 19 is properly proportioned to permitthe passage therethrough of' theushatt 30 so tha' in assembling the device the clutch members may first be inserted in the housing and the beam 19 inserted through the housing by means of the hand hold 33 and the shaft inserted transversely through its bearings and through the slot 22 of the beam. The clutch members 23 are now permitted under the action of their springs 25 and 28 to move slidably against the cams 29 and by reason of the shoulders adjacent such cams, prevent the removal of the shaft 30 until the contact between the clutch members23 and the cams is again released.

position, as shown in full lines at Fig. l, whereby the shaft 30 is rotated so that the major of the cams 29 also stand vertical. In this position the springs 25 and 28 force the clutch members 23 outwardly away from the rack 2l permitting the free movement of the jaw 20 and beam 19. This is accomplished by manipulating the jaw through engagement with the hand hold 33 closing the movable jaw into engagement with theA work. The movement of the lever 32 in either direction to or toward the dotted line position shown at Fig. l irst rotates the shaft 30 and the cams 29 forcing the clutch members 23 in a direction away from the axis of the shaft 30. By reason of the inclined slot 26 the cam extremity 2' and curvature of the spring 28, the movement of the clutch member 223 is translated into a transverse movement toward and into engagement with the teeth of the rack 2l. T he continued movement of the lever forces the clutch members a still farther distance in position to the spring 28, but being now in locked engagement with the beam i9, moves the beam 19 and movable jaw therewith. By reason of the formation of the cams 29 the device will remain in any position to which the lever 2has been moved, retaining the work securely clamped between the jaws until the lever is returned to vertical whereupon th'e parts being again disconnected by the action of the springs 25 and 28 the work is released by the manual movement of the sliding jaw. This completes a cycle of operation and the device is in condition for repeating on any kind or size of work.
llaving thus fully described my said invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: y
l. ln a. vise, a housing, a jaw beam having` spaced teeth along its side inserted through the housing, a clutch member positioned within the housing and having teeth proportioned to coact with the teeth of the beam, means to hold the clutch member normally and yieldingly with the teeth out of engagement, a cam adapted when oscillated in either directionto move the clutch into engagement with the teeth ofthe beam and to further move the beam after such engagement, and means to apply power to the cam.
2. A vise comprising a housing, a jaw beam freely movable within the housing, a ri ck formed upon the side of the jaw beam, a clutch member disposed within the housing and having teeth proportioned to interen'gage with the teeth of the rack, a spring tending to move the clutch out of engagement with the rack, a cam adapted when os cillated `in either direction to move the clutch against the tension of spring into engagement with the rack and to provide for a further movement of the engaged beam, and means to`apply power to the cam.
3. In a vise a housing appropriately mounted, a jaw beam freely slid'able within the housing, a rack upon the side of the beam, a clutch member disposed within the housing and provided with teeth proportioned to interengage with the teeth of the rack, a spring tending to hold the clutch normally out of engagement with the rack, a shaft inserted through the housing and an appropriate opening in the beam, `a cam carriedv by the shaft adapted to move the clutch into engagement with the rack and to provide for a further movement of the engaged beam, and means to apply power to the shaft. i

A. vise embodying a housing, a jaw beam freely slidable within the housing, a rack carried by the jaw beam, a clutch block located within the housing and adjacent the beam and provided with teeth to interengage with the teeth of the rack, a curved member secured to the exterior of the housingand having its extremity curved into the housing adjacent the rack, a cam extremity carried upon the curved member, a spring carried by the clutch block in yielding engagement with the cam extremity, a shaft journaled in the housing and inserted through an appropriate slot in the beam, a cam carried by the shaft in engagement with the clutch block adapted to move the clutch slidably upon the cam extremity of the curved niember into engagement with the rack and providing for a further movement of the engaged clutch in opposition to the tension of the curved member, and means to apply power to the shaft.
5. A vise embodying a housing, a jaw beam freely slidable within the housing, a rack upon one side of the beam, a clutch block disposed within the housing and provided with teeth proportioned to interengage with the rack, a spring secured to the exterior of the housing and having its end curved into the housing adjacent the rack and intoengagement with the clutch block and tending to normally hold the clutch block'with its teeth out of engagement with the rack, a shaft journaled in the housing and passing through an appropriate slot in the beam and provided with cam portions engaging the ends of the clutch blocks y adapted to move the clutch blocks against the tension of the curved springs into engagement with the rack and to'provide for a further movement of the engaged rack against the tension of the curved springs, and means to apply power to rotate the shaft.
6. A vise embodying a housing, a jaw beam freely slidablewithin the housing, a (efluteh member positioned within the housing and provided with means adapted to engage with the beam, means to hold the clutch normally out of engagement with the beam, a shaft inserted through the housing and an appropriate slot in the beam, and a double acting cam carried by the shaft adapted to move the clutch into engagement with the beam upon a rotary movement of the shaft in either direction.
7. A vise comprising a housing, a jaw beam freely slidable within the housing and provided with a rack, a clutch disposed within the housing and provided with teeth proportioned to interengage with the teeth of the rack, a spring tending to hold the clutch normally and yieldingly' out of engagement with the rack, a shaft journaled within the housing and provided with a double cam adapted to move the clutch upon a rotary movement of the shaft in either direction, and means to apply power to the shaft.

A vise embodying a housing, a jaw beam freely slidable within the housing and provided upon opposite sides with sunken panels, rack members inserted within the sunken panels, and carrying teeth, the outer i, extremities of which are substantially flush with the surface of the beam, clutches disposed within the housing upon opposite sides of the beam and provided with teeth proportioned to interengage with the teeth of the rack, springs secured to the exterior of the housing and having their ends curved into the housing and engaging the clutches and tending to hold the clutches normally and yieldingly out of engagement with the racks, a shaft journaled in the housing and inserted through an appropriate slot 1n the beam and provided with reduced cam portions into which reductions the extremities of the clutches are forced by their springs and into engagement with the cams preventing the displacement of the shaft, and means to apply power to the shaft to rotate the shaft and cam to move the clutches against the tension of their springs into engagement with the racks of the beam and to provide a further movement of the engaged beam with the clutches.
9. A vise embodying a stationary jaw, a movable jaw, a lever, means to apply the lever to either side selectively, and means whereby oscillation of the lever ineither direction when located in either position moves the movable jaw.

12. A vise embodying a stationary jaw, a movable jaw, a cam, means whereby the oscillation of the cam in either direction moves the lnovable aw, a lever, and means carried by the cam for engaging the lever on either side of the stationary jaw selectively.
13. A vise embodying a stationary jaw, a movable jaw, a shaft extending through the stationary jaw, a cam carried by the shaft adapted to move the movable jaw, a lever, and means for connecting the lever selectively with the opposite ends of the shaft.
