This invention has reference to improvements relating to vises and is concerned particularly with vises of the movable jaw may be obtained by moving the `5l screw out of engagement with the co-operating nut.
The present invention has for its object the provision of an improved vise having a quick action of the kind aforesaid and utilizing movable eccentric bearirigs for the screw which is simple in construction, eflicient in operation and which incorporates a positiveactuation of the eccentric bearings in which the screw is mounted.
The invention consists of an improved vise oi the kind hereinbefore referred to wherein the screw `is provided with means which is caused to engage positively with complementary means carried by a movable eccentric bearing for the screw to cause the eccentric to move the screw out of engagement with the nut when the screw is rotated in a counter direction to that employed for moving the jaws of the vise together.
The invention further resides in the details of construction of the improved vise to be described 25 hereinafter.
A convenient embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate similar parts in the diierent views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal part sectional elevation of a vise constructed in accordance with this invention showing the nut and screw in engagement.

According to the illustrated embodiment of the invention the movable jaw B is formed integral with a box slide la which is slidably mounted in a horizontal direction within the guide bracket 'I formed integral with the base la. In both ends of the box slide there is housed a rotatable eccentric 8, the said eccentrics being interconnected by a flat bar 9. Each eccentric 8 is provided with a bearing aperture in which is rotatably mounted the plain end sections Illa of the screw I0, the buttress threads whereof co-operate with the the kind in which a quick action oiY Limited, Wednesbury, Eng- 1936, Serial No. 100,398
threads of a half-nut block I I carried in the base 1a by means of the integral shank IIa and secured by the nut I2, the shank I Ia passing through a circular aperture I3ain the plate I3, the plate I3 being fixed in a recess on the underside of the base 'Ia by means of screws |310. The forward end of the screw spindle projects from the movable jaw 6 and has xed thereon a boss I4 provided with a through aperture for the tommy-bar I5. The boss It is provided with a spring pressed axially slidable plunger I6 which isadapted to co-operate with one or other of a pair of oppositelydisposed ratchet vteeth 8a, 8b formed in the outer face ci the forward eccentric 8 mounted in the movable jaw t. rEhis forward eccentric carries a projecting pin 8 Vwhich co-operates with a shoulder 6b formed in the movable jaw 6 for limiting the counter-turningmovement of the screw It.
The operation of the vise is as follows:-
When the screw I0 is rotated in the direction to close the vise, for example, clockwise viewed from the forward end of the vise, the tendency is to rotate the eccentrics in the same direction as the screw, the thread of the screw It being in engagement with the thread of the half-nut block II as seen in Figures l and 2, thus enabling the jaws of the vise to close by the ordinary turning operation of the tommy-bar I5. Rotation of the screw Iii in this direction is permitted since the spring pressed plunger I6 rides over the ratchet teeth 8a, 8b formed in the forward eccentric 8 mounted in the movable jaw 6. The bar 9 connecting the eccentrics 8 is in the closing operation in the position seen in Figures l and 2 of the drawings, that is, the one edge of the bar is in contact with the top face of the one side of thehalf-nut block I I as seen clearly in Figure 2, this bar 9 in addition to forming the means of connection between the two eccentrics 8 may also form a limiting stop for the -motion of the eccentrics more particularly in the closing operation of the vise asseen in Figure 2. When the reverse motion of the vise first takes place this bar 9 is moved over the top ci the screw lil until the other edge of the bar abuts against the opposite top or side face of the half-nut block I I as seen clearly in Figure 4.
When it is desired to obtain a quick action of the movable jaw 6 the screw Iii is rotated a halfturn in a counter clockwise direction by means of the tommy-bar I5.; This counter clockwise rotation causes the spring pressed plunger I6 carried by the boss t@ to engage with one or other of the ratchet teeth 8a or 3b formed in the forward eccentric 8 and thus to rotate the eccentrics until the stop pin 8C carried by the forward eccentric comes into contact with the shoulder 6b formed on the movable jaw 6 (see Figure 5),.
'I'his counter clockwise motion through the pair of'eccentrics lifts the thread of the screw'rlr out of engagement with the thread of the half-nut block Il s'o that complete freedomVV of the screw l0 obtains, and the vise jaw 6 can be freely moved longitudinally in either direction as required.V In so disconnecting the thread of theY screw l0 from the thread of the half-nut block H, the half-nut block is moved laterally'in the 'Y base 'Ia to the position seentin' Figure 4, which' motion is permitted by the clearance obtaining between the shank l la and the aperture I3a in the plate I3. This motion of the half-nut block Il admits of a ready engagement and disengagement of the thread of the screw vwith orfrornY the thread of the half-nut block.
