Be it known their 1, FRANK W. humans, acitizen of the United States, and a resident or the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Talking- Mechine Needles and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the some, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a port of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved form of a talking machine needle or stylus member formed to permit either end of the needle thereof to be used as the playing point by simply reversing the needle tubing through which the needle nieinber longitudinully projects.

It is an object of this invention to construct o phonograph playing needle both ends of which are udepted to be used. as playing points.

It is furthermore an'object of this invention to provide a needle tubing through which projects a needle having one of its extending ends longer than the other and lurther :u lztpted to utilize either projecting; end as the playing point.

Secured in and projecting through the passage in said tub ing 14, is a stylus or needle 15, the ends of which project beyond the ends of thetub ing to permit either of said ends to be used as the playing point. Threaded upon the tubing 1 or rigidly secured thereon by any other suitable means is a ring flange or collar 16, adapted to limit the inward movement of the tubing 14, into the needle holder 7, of the stylus bar 6. The tubing 14, is

heldsecured in position by means of the retaining screw 8, which engages the portion of the tubing which projects into the holder 7.

I i g. 6, shows another modified form of the device comprising a casing or body portion 17, having integrally formed thereon between the ends thereof a ring flange or collar 18. Each end of the casing 17, is drilled axially to permit a needle 19, to be securely seated therein to permit the outer projecting end. of either one of said needles to be used as the playing point. The needle casing 17 is adapted tobe mounted with either end thereof projecting into the holder 7, the flange 18, acting to limit the inward movement of said casing. The retaining screw 8, is adapted to hold the casing 17, 1n position to permit the needle 19, secured in the. other or outer end of the casing to be used as the playing point. As clearly shown in p the drawings, the neck 9, and the flanges l6 and 18, respectively of the various forms of the device, are positioned at different distances from the ends of the respective needle casings thereby providing one end which is longer than the other whereby softer or louder sounds are produced depending upon whether the shorter or longer portion of the needle member projects from the holder.

I am aware'that various details of construction may be varied through a Wide range Without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

1. A stylus for talking machines comprising a double pointed needle inelosed in a casing with only the two points thereof projecting, said points being of unequal lengh so as to produce either a loud or soft tone.

2. A talking machine stylus. comprising a casing adapted to be secured in the stylus holder of a machine, said casing inclosing a' needle with its two points projecting unequal distances therefrom.
