Abstract

336,648. Holman, H. E. July 15, 1929. Gramophone pick - ups; magnetic instruments.-The armature of a gramophone pick-up is formed by a permanent magnet having a stylus engaging parts so shaped as to hold the stylus securely in position, during operation, due to the reaction between the stylus and the record. The armature a, Fig. 1, consists of a tube of highly magnetic material, e.g. cobalt steel, and the stylus b is located at one end e in a V-shaped or other opening f, Fig. 2, and at the other end c in a narrowed portion of the armature tube provided by a bush d, Fig. 1; or the tube may be reduced or swaged in as at c, Fig. 3. The magnetized armature holds the stylus in position when not recording. The armature is preferably mounted in a stirrup g, Fig. 5, provided with radial arms h which are clamped as in Fig. 3; or a spindle may be bored in the middle to receive the armature and the spindle clamped between rubber pads. The magnetized armature oscillates relatively to coils m, Fig. 8, mounted on supports n; or the coils m may be disposed on arms of an iron circuit o, Fig. 10.
