To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM KOHN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain sound record holders of the above character which will enable the user thereof to identify the record contained within the same by means of the title thereof, the name of the composer, the name of the singer or performer carried upon the record itself, and also by means of the libretto or text to which the title is applied, which libretto or text are carried upon the holder itself and adjacent to an opening therein through which the aforesaid data which is located upon the record may be inspected simultaneously. And the object of my invention is furthermore to provide holders of the above character which may be used not only in the above manner, but also to provide for the user of the record the original libretto or text of the selection recorded upon the record and also to provide for the user thereof, if in a foreign language, a literal translation thereof as well as a liberal or literary translation of the same.

Hitherto in operating phonograph records, it has been practically impossible in a case of song selections for the words of the performer to be distinguished, even though the hearer is familiar with the language in which the selection is being sung. Furthermore, the best of such selections are usually sung in foreign languages with which the hearer is usually unfamiliar, and when the selec.-

tions are sung'in foreign languages none of the meaning of the selection being sung is conveyed to the audience.

Further object of my invention is to provide a holder of this type, so that the tendency will be for the operator of the phonograph to more carefully preserve the holders and thus more effectively protect the records from rough usage.

YVllile my invention is capable of embodiment in many different forms, for the purpose of illustration, I have shown only one form of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- The figure is a perspective view of a holder made in accordance with my invention.

In the drawings I have shown a holder in the form of an envelop 1 which may be made of paper or any other desired material and which contains a phonographic record 2. The phonographic record 2 may contain any desired selection, but by way of example it may carry a selection from one of the operas, as for example Faust, sung by Enrico Caruso. The central portion of the record 2 so will be visible through a circular opening 3 in the center of the holder 1, and this central portion of the record 2 will carry a title 4:

Below the circular opening 3 there will be provided the text of the original libretto 8 under which there will be a literal translation 10, while 0 under the literal translation 10 there may he. provided a liberal or literary translation 11. On the upper portion of the holder 1 there may be provided a picture 12 giving an illustration from the opera carried by the record 5 2, or a picture of the singer. while at one side of the picture 12 there may be provided notes 13 for the selection being sung, and on the other side remarks of a literary, musical or historical character bearing upon said seme the record will be withdrawn from the pho. A sound record having thereon identifying data, and a holder for the same having thereon data adapted to be used in connection with the firstmentioned data, said holder having a central opening through which the first mentioned data may be observed, said first mentioned data comprising the title of the selection, and said last mentioned data comprising the musical notes thereof.

7. A sound record holder having thereon words in a foreign language corresponding to the sounds adapted to be produced by a record for which the holder is provided.

8. A sound record holder having thereon a translation of foreign words corresponding to the sounds adapted to be produced by a record for which the holder is provided.

9. A sound record holder having thereon musical characters corresponding to the sounds adapted to be produced by a record for which the holder is provided.

10. A sound record having thereon identifying data' and a holder for the same having thereon data, and so constructed that the data on both record and holder are Within the field of vision of an observer while
