Description

w. H. CLOPTON, R.
coma SUPPORTER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 18, 1919.
VJILLIAM H. CLOPTON, JR-., OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
COLLAR-SUPPORTER.
Application filed September 18, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM H. CLoPToN, Jr., an officer of the United States Army, and a citizen of the United States, residing temporarily at Camp Meade, in the county of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in collar supporters for uniform coats. 1
Uniform coats commonly include an upstanding neckband, and it is customary to detachably connect with the interior thereof a collar which extends or projects slightly above the neckband. As such collars are made of different heights, it is quite troublesome with the devices heretofore employed for connecting them to such neckbands to insure that different collars will uniformly extend above the neckbandlVith the supporters commonly employed, it is necessary to detach the same from the neckband and secure them in another position thereon to adapt them to properly support collars of different heights.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive collar supporter which may be permanently attached to the inner face of the neckband of a uniform coat and which will include a vertically adjustable member adapted to properly embrace and engage a collar.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the neckband of a uniform coat having an embodiment of. the present invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an elevation on an enlarged scale of the supporter detached from the, neckband.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the supporter.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view substantially on the line H of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a bottom view.
Fig. 6 is a detail illustrating a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the neckband of a uniform coat and 2 a collar, which is shown as supported by a plurality of devices particularly illustrated in Figs. 2 to 5.
As shown, the improved supporter comprises essentially a plate-like member 3 which may be formed of light metal or any Specification of Letters Patent.
formed by Patented June 22, 1920. Serial No. 324,499.
her 3 is provided at its ends with ears 4 hav- 111g apertures 5 formed therein through which it may be stitched to the neckband, but it will be evident that other means, such, for example, as spurs or barbs 6 shown in Fig. 6, may be provided for securing the attachment to the neckband 1. The member 3, which is elongated in form, is provided wlth a centrally arranged rib that may be formed integral with the body thereof and has longitudinally extending grooves in its opposite sides. This rib 7 may, as shown, be bending up portions of the blank from which the body of the attachment is produced and, as shown, it includes a central groove or way 8.
A clip comprising a body 9 and a yielding or spring-like tongue 10 is fitted about the vertically extending rib 7, so as to be adjusted vertically thereof. The sides of the body 9 of the clip are bent inwardly to engage the grooves or ways formed in the side walls of the rib-like portion 7, and these act to prevent lateral separation of the clip and attaching member 3. The tongue 10 is bent laterally and then upward to provide a seat or support for the lower edge of the collar 2 and preferably a small aperture 11 is provided in said tongue with which co operates a slight projection 12 on the body of the clip so that the collar 2 is securely grasped between said tongue and body and prevented from moving relative thereto.
To retain the'clip in the desired adjusted position on its supporting member, the bot y thereof is shown as provided with a projection 13 and suitable indentations are formed on the side walls of the groove 8 in the rib 7 to cooperate with said projections and prevent the clip from moving downward under the weight of the collar or unless positively moved.
The operation and advantages of a device of the character hereinbefore described and illustrated in the drawing will, it is believed, be readily appreciated. It will be seen that the device can be easily attached or removed from the neckband of a coat and, when in use, all the parts thereof are concealed and the height to which the collar extends above the neckband may be readily controlled as desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A collar supporter for uniform coats comprising a base plate adapted to be attached to the inner face of the neck-band of a coat, and a clip adjustable vertically on the base plate and adapted to embrace the lower edge of a collar, whereby the collar may be readily positioned to project to the desired extent above the neck band and be securely retained in its adjusted position.
2. A collar supporter for uniform coats comprising a member adapted to be attached to the inner face of the neck band of a coat and a slide having on one face means for engaging a guide on said member, whereby it may be adjusted vertically and retained in any adjusted position, and having on its other face means for supporting a collar,
substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A collar supporter for uniform coats comprising a member adapted to be attached to the inner face of the neck-band of a coat and provided with a vertically extending rib-like portion, and a clip having its body embracing said rib, permitting it to be adjusted longitudinally thereof, and provided on its face away from the rib with a flexible tongue adapted to permit the lower edge of a collar to be inserted between it and the body of the clip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. A collar supporter for uniform coats comprising a relatively narrow memberj adapted to be attached to the inner face of the neck band of a coat'and provided with a vertically extending rib-like section, a clip having its body engaging said rib to move vertically of the neck band without disenga ing said member from the coat.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
