Be it known that I, JorIN H. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Yonkers, county of Vvestchester, State of New -York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles of Furniture, of which the following is a dc scri ption.

My invention relates to a combination chair-table adapted to be used when combined as a couch, or when separated as a chair and a table. The object of my invention is to provide a combination article of this kind which will be strong and durable,

easy to manipulate, and an arrangement which may easily be converted to its several uses. 7

The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification.

Figure 1 shows my improved arrangement assembled so as to form a couch.

Fig. 2 is a detail view showing a chair forming a part of the arrangement;

Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the table with shortened legs; and

Fig. 4c is a detail view showing the arrangement for lengthening the legs of the table so that it may be used as an ordinary table.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the chair 1 may be of any suitable construction, but it is preferably provided with a back 2 and a seat 3 of such combined length that the cushion 4 will operate to cover both the back and the seat with a small amount of overhang, and also be of suitable length to cover an ordinary couch. The chair is preferably provided with means for holding the table 5 in line with the seat of the chair, so that the bottom of the chair and the table together form a couch. Preferably, I provide sockets as at 6 in the feet or supports for the chair in which the legs 7- of the table rest. The table 5 is provided, as shown, with the short legs 7 and with extensions therefor 8,

and the short legs 7 are of such height as to support the table in line with the seat of the chair. When it is desired to use the table for ordinary purposes, the legs 8 are secured in position as shown in Fig. 4.

When it is desired to use the arrangement as a couch, the extension legs of the table are removed and the table is secured in front of and in line with the seat of the chair, as shown in Fig. 1. The cushion is then pulled down from the back of the chair and is used as a mattress or pad for the couch. When the couch is no longer desired, the cushion is raised and secured in the position shown in Fig. 2, the table is removed, and, if desired, is provided with the extension legs and used in the ordinary way.

I believe that I have provided an arrangement that can be converted either into a A couch or into a separate chair and a separate table, with a minimum inconvenience.

WVhile I have described only one embodiment of my invention, I am aware that mod ifications may be made by those skilled in the art, and I desire protection for all such modifications as come within the scope of my claims. 7

What I claim is: p I

1. In combination a chair, a part capable of separate use as a table and having legs of such length that the top of said part'is of the same height as the seat of said chair, and additional leg sections adapted to be aflixed to the legs of said part to fit it for use as a table, the front feet of said chair having forwardly projecting members with vertical holes therethrough for receiving two of the legs of said part so that it may be secured to said chair to form a couch.

2. Incombination av chair, a part capable of separate use as a table, having legs of such length that the top of said part is of the same height as the seat of said chair, and adapted to be secured in front of said seat of said chair to form a couch, and additional leg sections adapted to be aflixed to the legs of said part to fit it for use as a table.
