Description

umrze sTATEs PATENTK OFFICE.V
- WRENOH.
specification of Letters Patent. Patent-jad (11111622, 1920 Application men: December a, 1919. serial Np. 842,097.
T0 all 'whom it may conoem:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. KIRKPAT- RIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county Of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new improvements in wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench so constructed that a greater pressure On the handle when turning a nut will cause a correspondingly greater action between the jaws to force the jaws in firmer engagement with the nut.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and Operation which will be more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view On line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation with parts broken away, the jaws being open.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 with the j aws in closed position.
Fig. 6 is a disassembled perspective view of the jaws. v A
1 indicates a wrench handle formed with a bifurcated end portion 2, in which is mounted the jaw members 3 and 4, the jaw member 3 being hereaf'ter distinguished as the Operating jaw and jaw member 4 as the slid ing jaw.
The jaw members are mounted in the bifurcated end for respective movement on pins 5 and 6 extending through and carried by the bifurcated ends.
The jaw members are formed of plates 7 and jaws 8, the j aws being formed with the plates at one edge thereof and extending beyond one face of the plate so that, when the jaw members are assembled, the jaw will extend over the opposite plate so that both j aws will be in alinement.
The jaw member 3 has a transverse rib 10 which engages in a slot 11 and jaw member 4 has a transverse rib 12 which engages in the slot 13, so that the jaw member 4 is only permitted a transverse sliding motion with respect to the Operating jaw member.
The Operating jaw member 3 is pivotally i supported on the pin 5 and has a slot 14 concentric therewith, through which the pin 6 passes, the jaw member being adapted to rotate about pin 5 as is obvious.
The sliding jaw member has a slot 15 through which pin 5 passes which slot is parallel with the ribs 10 and 12. A slot 16' in the sliding jaw member receives pin 6 and registers with slot 14 in jaw member 3 at one point only, the point where pin 6 passes through the two slots.
Any movement of the Operating jaw member about the pin 5 will cause a corresponding transverse sliding movement of the sliding jawV caused by the change in position of the pin 6 in the slots, the ribs 10 and 12 guiding the sliding jaw member.
In the use of the wrench the j aws in position as shown in Fig. 1 are placed over a nut in the usual manner, the handle of the wrench is then moved to cause the jaws to move together as shown inFig. 5. The jaws tighten on the nut before the limit of movement is reached and further movement of the handle to turn the nut will cause a greater tightening motion of the jaws on the nut and prevent the j aws from slipping` or marring the faces of the nut.
What I claim is 1. A wrench comprising a handle having a bifurcated end portion, an Operating jaw member and a sliding jaw member, formed of plates adjacently disposed and mounted in the bifurcated end of the handle, the plates having jaws formed thereon, each jaw extending over the adjacent plate so that `the jaws are opposed and in line with one another, the plate Of the Operating jaw member having a hole and a slot therein the slot being in the circumference of a circle with the hole as a center, the plate of the sliding jaw member having a recess to register with the hole, and a slot which partially registers with the slot of the Operating jaw, the Operating jaw having a rib and groove formed therewith adapted to coact with a groove and a ribformed with the sliding jaw permitting respective movement between the jaws in line therewith, a pivot pin mounted in the handle and extending through 'the recess in the sliding jaw and the hole in the Operating jaw and another pin mounted in the handle extendin through the slots in the Operating and sli ing j aws,
whereby a movement of the Operating jaw around the pvot pin will open 01' close the jaws.
2. A wreneh including a handle, an operatng jaw member, a pvot for pvotally mountng said member in the handle, the said jaw member having a slot ercumferem tally d'sposed to the pvot, a sliding jaw member mounted in the handle having a 10 transverse slot and a longtudnal Slot, the
transverse slot being adapted jtoj permit movement of the pvot relatve to the slidng j aw member and a pin passng through the longitudinal slotv of the slding jaw member and the slot of the Operating jaw member Whereby a movement of the handle about the pivot Will cause a relatve movement of the jaw members.
In testimor: whereof I affix my Snature.
