This invention relates to tack or 'nail supports, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide novel means for supporting the tacks or nails in an upright position, to facilitate the use thereof with magnetic hammers or the like.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character constructed to cause the tacks or nails supported thereby to automatically assume a vertical position upon the proper manipulation of the device.

A further object of the invention is to provide eflicient means for permitting the support to be secured to a wall or other structure, to enable easy access to be had to the interior thereof, when the device is put to use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of What is claimed without r departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a tack holder constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown with the cover thereof in its open position,

end walls, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.

A supporting surface 10, is supported by the box-like construction, the edges thereof being disposed within the grooves 8 and 9,

and secured therein against displacement,

by any suitable means, the supporting surface however, being preferably formed of non-magnetic material such as aluminum, and provided with transverse grooves, or irregularities disposed in spaced relation with each other.

These grooves 11, present walls 12, which walls are provided with openings 13 arranged in staggered relation with each other, and since these openings 13 are formed in the walls of the grooves 11, it will be seen that the openings lie in a plane atan angle with relation to the opposed Wall, so

that a tack or nail moving over the supporting surface will contact with one of the side walls of the openings to the end that the same is guided into the openings where they are supported in a vertical position.

A cover 14, is hingedly connected to the box-like construction by means of the hinges 15, the forward portion of the cover having connection with the arms 16 disposed adjacent the ends thereof, which arms 16, have pivotal connection with the'arms 17 pivotally connected to the box-like structure, so

that when the cover 14 is moved to its open position, the arms 16 and 17 support the box-like construction at right angles with relation to the cover.

Disposed substantially centrally of the cover, and formed in the inner side wall thereof is a relatively long groove 18 in which operates the securing device 19, which is of a length equal to the length of the groove, and having one end thereof extending at right angles to its main portion, the right angled end being pointed as at 20', and operates through an opening 21, formed in the cover 14:, the securing device 19 being pivoted between the walls of the groove, by means of the pivot pin 21. It is therefore obvious that when the cover 14 is moved to an open position, and the device is to be supported by a wall, the securing device 19 is moved to cause the pointed extremity 20 of the securing device to pass through the opening 21 in the cover, and embed itself in the wall on which the device is to be supported, this movement of the securing device,

being usually accomplished by slightly tapping the securing device with a hammer.

The grooves 22 and 23, are formed in one of the side members and one of the end members respectively, and receive the ends of a partitioning member 2%, which partitioning member provides a compartment in one corner of the boxdike structure, for retaining the nails or tacks carried by the tack support.

In the operation of the device, a suitable number of tacks are removed from the compartment, and placed on the non-magnetic surface, whereupon the device is moved Within the hands oi? the operator, to cause the tacks to fall into the openings on the supporting surface. It follows that the tacks are now in a vertical. position, and in a position to be engaged by the magnetic hammer, employed in connection therewith.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

l. A tack supporting device including a box-like construction, a supporting surface of'non-magnetic material, supported within the box-like structure, and in spaced relation With the top and bottom thereof, said supporting surface having grooves formed therein, said supporting surface having openings formed in the side walls thereof, and a cover for said box-like structure.

2. A tack supporting device including a box-like construction, a supporting surface supported in the box-like construction, said supporting surface having a plurality of grooves, a plurality of openings formed therein, each of said openings having one of its Walls extending above the plane of the grooves and means for closing the top of the box-like construction. 7
