Be it known that I, .GAYLE L. SQUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Hastings, inv the county of St. John and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Barrel, Wine, and Lard Press, of which the following is a specification.
1 The device forming the subject matter of this application is a press, adapted to be employed for inserting the heads into barrels. v r I One object of the invention is to provide novel means for exerting pressure on the head while the same is being inserted into thebarrel.

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description pm the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of-construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Incarrymg out the invention there is provided a frame, comprising a base 1 having openings-2 adapted to receive securing elements 3, whereby the base 1 may be attached in vertical position to a post 1 or the like. Adjacent to its lower end, the base 1 is supplied with a vertical stop wing 5. A guide rod 9 is mounted in the brackets 7 and 8, in spaced relation to the base 1, and is held against longitudinal movement in brackets '7 and 8. A frame 14 is mounted at its inner end on the guide rod 9 for vertical sliding movement, and for horizontal swinging movement, the frame 14 comprising spaced arms 15, the rear ends of which are mounted on the guide rod 9, to afford a vertical sliding adjustment of the frame and to provide for a lateral swinging nected to a casinglfi, a reinforcing flange 17 being formed integrally with the arms:
15 and with the rear wall of the casing 16. The casing is closed at its forward side by a face plate 18 held in place by securing elements 19.
A horizontal shaft 20 is journaled for retation in the side portions of the casing 16 and extends across the interior of the casing. The shaft 20 is supplied, externally of the casing 16, with cranks 21 or other suitable means whereby rotation may be imparted to theshaft. Worms 22 are secured as indicated at 23 to the shaft 20 and are located in the casing 16. The worms 22 mesh into worm wheels 24;,- formed integrally with, or
otherwise connected to, pinions 25, the worm wheels and the pinions being located within the casing 16. The pinions 25 are supplied with hubs 26 journaled in the face plate 18, the worm wheels 24 being provided with hubs 27 mounted to rotate in the rear wall of the casing 16, the pinions and the worm wheels being housed in the casing 16, to the rear of the faceplate 18.
A plunger 28 is mounted for vertical reciprocation in the casing 16, to the rear of the face plate 18 and in front of the worm wheels 2-1. The plunger 28 preferably is in the form of a bar, provided" on its opposite edges with racks 29 into which the pinions 25 mesh. A foot 30 is secured to the lower end of'the plunger 28 and is held securely thereon by brace blocks 31. The foot 30 is provided with means for engaging and holding a being in the form of depending prongs 32. A helical compression spring 33 surrounds a portion of the guide rod 9, the upper end barrel head,'sa1d means preferably of the helical spring abutting against the I lower one of the arms 15 of the frame 14:, the lower end of the spring abutting against the lower bracket 7 on the base 1. A latch 34 is pivoted at to the upper bracket 8 for vertical swinging movement, and is pro vided with a side handle 36. The numeral 37 marks a retractile spring, the rear end of which is secured, as indicated at 38 to one edge of the base 1. A securing device 39 attaches the forward end of the spring 37 to the latch 34. x
The invention comprises a support 40, adapted to hold the head of a barrel, the support embodying a lever ll extended through the opening 6 in the stop wing 5 and mounted to swing vertically in the stop rib 11, the lever being fulcrumed intermediate its ends as shown at 42, upon the base 1. A receptacle 43, adapted to holda barrel head, is carried by one end of the. lever 41.
In practical operation,one or more barrel heads are placed in the receptacle 43 of the lever 4L1. The frame 1 1 then is swung sidewise into the dotted line position of Fig. 2 until the foot 30 on the lower end of the plunger 28 is directly above the receptacle The right hand end (Fig. 2) of the lever ll is then struck a smart blow, the
lever tiltingon its fulcrum 4L2 and the re ceptacle 4L3 being carried upwardly. iythis operation, the. barrel head in the receptacle 13 is engaged with the prongs 32 011 the foot 30 of the plunger 28. The frame 1 1 is now swung around until it projects forwardly with respect to the base 1, as shown in Fig. 1. This operation disposes the foot 30 of the plunger 28, and the barrel head carried thereby, directly above the barrel (not shown) which is to be headed. The frame 14: may now beslid downwardly on the guide rod 9, so as to bring the foot 30 and the barrel head thereon relatively close to the upper end of the barrel which is to be headed up. The latch 34 is swung down wardly on its pivotal mounting 35 and engages the upper one of the arms 15 of the frame 14L, to holdtheframe depressed. It is to be observed that the device 39 which connects the forward end of the spring 33 with the latch 34 is so located with respect to the pivotal mounting of the latch that the spring will hold the latch in place when the latch is swung downwardly'to engage with the upper one of the arms 1150f the frame 1% as indicated in Fig. 2. Further, when the latch Ell is swung outwardly and bacltwardly, into engagement with the base 1, as shown in Fig. 1, the spring 38 will hold the latch in the position to whichit has been moved, o wingto the specific location of the securing device 89 with respect to the pivotal mounting 35 of the latch. After the frame 14: has been swung into forwardly projecting position withrespect to the base 1, and afterthe frame has been held down,
.what is claimed is latch 34, the shaft 20 may be rotated through the instrumentality of one or both of the cranks 21. The oppositely threaded worms 22 cooperate with the worm wheels 2% and rotate the pinions 25, the pinions 25 coacting with the racks 29 of the plunger 28 to cause a depression of the plunger, the head of the barrel thus being forced intothe open upper end of the barrel by the foot 30 whereon the head of the barrel is held by the prongs 32. After the head has been seated in the end of the barrel, the latch 34 ma be swung backwardly into the position of ig. 1, the handle 36 of course, constituting means for manipulating the latch. Vlien the latch 34 is swung backwardly out ofengagement with the upper'one of the arms 15 of the frame 14:, the framewill rise, respon sive to the action of the spring 33. VVhen the frame 14 is swung to one side on the guide rodS) to position the foot 30 above the receptacle 43 of the lever 41,t he arms '15 of the frame engage with thestop ribs 11 and 12. into the position, shown in Fig. 1 priorto the mounting of the head in the barrel, the lower arm 15 of the frameabuts against the stop wing 5, and, thus, the frame is held in outstanding relation with respectto the base 1 at right angles thereto. Owing to the fact that, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the worm wheels 24 are of larger diametenthan' the pinions 25, and sincethe rack bar 2829, together with the worms 22, form parts of the structure, itwill be obvious thata great mechanical advantage is afforded when the head is pressed into the barrel, it being necessary to exert but a slight force "on/the shaft 20, by means ofthecranks 21, in order to obtain an exceedingly great pressure at the foot 30.
