To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, JOE A. HUGHES and THOMAS E. HERINGTON,` citizens of the United States, residingat Mallard, in` the county of Palo `Alto and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification. y

This invention relates to umbrellas land more particularly to an apparatus forming the frame of-an umbrella or parasol which will be readily collapsible so that the-ulrbrella or parasol. may be packed in a relatively small space such as a trunk or valise.

A further object of the invention is to provide a collapsible umbrella which will have the appearance of an 'ordinary umbrella when in use and which will have the collapsible parts arranged so that they will be held securely inthe desired operative position when the umbrella is in use.

A further object yof this invention is the provision of a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts, but is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is tobe had to the following description and accompanying drawings, rin which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the umbrella constructed in accordance with our invention and showing the parts in operative position. e

Referring to the drawingsy wherein is illustrated the preferred form of our invention, in which like numerals of reference indicateflike or corresponding parts throughout the several views, the shaft comprises a series of'tubular members 1, 2 and 3 which are telescopically connected together and which are provided with longitudinal slots 4 each of which receives a pin 5 carried by one `of the corresponding collapsible parts to permit telescopica] movement of the sections in order that the handle may be collapsed to a relatively short length'as shown in Fig. 2. The small upper member 3 has one end yprovided with a ferrule 6 to which are hingedly connected the ribs 7 which are normally straight but are adapted to flex or `bend in the usual manner when moved into operative position. The shaft also has slidably mounted thereon ay sleeve 8 which is provided with a plurality of ears receiving pivot pins 9l whereby the braces 10 may be connected to the movable sleeve. Each rib 7 comprises the hingedly connectedsections 12 and 13. The section V12 has mounted vided with opposite ears 15 between which one end of one of the brace members 10 is received and the brace member is pivotally connected to the ears 15 by means of a pin 16. The section 13 has one end curved as shown in Fig. 4 and the terminal of the curved portion is also joined to the pivot pin 16 while the opposite end of the section 13 is apertured as indicated at 17 whereby the cover of the umbrella may be attached in the usual manner. A sleeve 18 is carried by the outer end of the section 12 of each rib and the section 13 of the rib'is extended through this sleeve and is adapted to slide therethrough. Thev member 14 slides on the member 12 and each brace member 10 together with the corresponding section of the adjacent rib, indicated at 13 are adapted to move together, so that whenl the member 14 the parts 10 and 13 will move to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, so that the parts will be substantially parallel with the shaft of the umbrella.

In order that the sleeve 8 may be held in operative position when the umbrella is raised, the section 3 of the shaft isprovided with an elongatedslot 2O and a pair of spring latches 2l are mounted in position to spring outwardly through the slot 20 when the umbrella shaft is extended. Normally, when the umbrella shaft is collapsed, the section 2 of the shaft incloses the section 3 thereby maintaining the two spring latches Qlinwardly as shown in Fig. S. When the umbrella shaft is extended, however, the two latches 21 spring outwardly and their ends are spaced apart sufliciently to embrace the sleeve 8 as shown in Fig. l whereby the sleeve will be held in the desired fixed position in the upper end of the section 3. This maintains the brace member 10 in extended position and consequently the corresponding ribs will be extended so that the umbrella will be firmly held in open position.

The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference tor what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of our invention. We desire it to be understood that we may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :fy 4 A collapsible umbrella comprising a series of telescopically connected sections, a ferrule on the upper end of the upper section, a sleeve slidably mounted on said upper seci tion, means provided on said upper section for holding said sleeve in a desired position, ribs hingedly mounted upon said errule, extension ribs hingedly connected to said ribs, a sliding member mounted upon said ribs and provided with opposite ears, braces pivotally connected t0 said ears and said sleeves, said extension ribs having their inner ends curved and ivotally connected to said braces, a collar "Xedly mounted upon the outer ends of said ribs, thereby holding said extension ribs in alinement with said ribs when extended and parallel to said ribs when folded.
