Be it known that I, HOWARD M. DUDLEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve- Machines, of
ments in Hosiery-Dyeing clear, and exwhich the following is a full, act specification.
My invention relates and refers particularly to machines suitable for the dyeing of hosiery and similarfabrics.
The object of my invention is a device in which hosiery and similar fabrics may be dyed evenly and uniformly, -which object is accomplished byA a novel arrangement of foraminous chambers, through which the dyeing liquid may be so forced 'as to treat all portions of the fabricsequally.
My device comprises in a broad way a hollow foraminous reel carrying a series of dyeing chambers, all of the sides of which are foramin'ous, thus giving free access of the liquid equally throughout all of the chambers. It also comprises means whereby easy access can be made to any of the chambers. It also comprises a smaller testing device, in which hosiery can be treated uniformly with the hosiery in the larger device, and which can be removed from the liquid within the receptacle and examined without removing the liquid from the receptacle.A

a section through the line 3 3 to dyeing machines` parts are designated by -similar The particular form of the device of` my ,invention shown in the accompanying drawings, comprises a liquid receptacle formed by the sides 10, 11, 12, 13, the bottom 14 and the top 15 hinged to the side 11 at 16 and capable ofbeing clamped in a closed position to the side 13 `by means of the wing bolt 17. An annular track member 18 is supported within the receptacle on the side 1Q by means of the brackets 19, 19. A corresponding annular track member 20, in horizontal alinement with the member 18, is attached to the side'12 by means of the brackets 21, 21.
lVithin the liquid receptacle is a revoluble reel comprised of the two end flanges 22 and 23, connected together by the foraminous cylinder 24. Fixedly-attached to the fora'minous cylinder 24 and extendingoutwardly therefrom is a series of foraminous plates 25, 25, the end edges of which abut upon the fianges 22 and 23. A rock shaft 26 extends across the reel above each member 25 and is revoluble in the flange members '22l and 23. Fixedly attached to each rock-shaft 26 is a series of parallel members 27, 27 supported together by supporting bars 28, 28, s0 positioned that when a series of parallel members 27, 27 is closed inwardly of the reel it forms a foraminous top for va fiber chamber comprising a portion of the each member 29 has the extended arm 33 which can be slid under the rock-shaft 26, the handle 50 facilitating the operation, thus holding the top in a closed position.
The bars 27, 27 have their inner faces serrated at 34.

The foraminous cylinder 24 comprises a series of spaced parallel diamond-shaped bars 36, 36.
One end of the foraminous cylinder 24 abuts upon the imperforate flange 22, while the interior of the cylinder is extended into `the outwardly extended conical member 37 of the flange 23, which is further extended. into the pipe 38 which is connected to a means as a pump, not shown, for forcing liquid 5 therethrough. The pipe 38 is revoluble within the bushing formed by the extension 39 of the side l() and the bushing member 40. The flanges 22 and 23 have a series of extended brackets 4`1,\41, the outer portions of which are extended into the annular track members 42, 42 and 43, 43. Between the track members 42 and 20, and the track members 43 and 2O and between 42, 43 and 18, are two series of ball bearings 44, 44 running in suitable runways.
A cogged wheel 45 tixedly attached to the revoluble shaft 4G, extends through the top 15 and meshes with cogs upon the outer periphery of one of the track members 42.
A drain pipe 47, carrying the valve 48, opens into the liquid receptacle. The liquid receptacle also carries an overflow pipe 49. A. removable testing device comprises the side members 60, (31, (i2, (S-3, the foraminous bottom G4 similar to the foraminous cylinder 24 and a top attached to the side members by means of screw bolts 66, (S6, G6. The top has a number of openings 67, (i7. A. foraminous cover 68 to the fiber chamber is similar in general construction to one of the covers in the larger device. The member 37 has outwardly extended members G9, (i9 into which the sides (i2, (i3 of the testing device will tit, an opening 7() of the member 87 corresponding to the foraminous plate 64. The top 65 has an extended portion 71 through which there is a slidable pin 72 capable of insertion within the hole 73 of the flange 23. A spiral spring 74 abuts upon the member 71 and the collar 75 of the pin 72. Pivotally attached to the one end of the pin 72 is a double elbow link 7 6, which is revoluble upon the pin 77 carried by the bearing T8 upon the top 65. The member 76 is extended upwardly until it is above the liquid within the liquid receptacle, and has a hole 75) for the insertion of a hook 80. A member 81 of the flange 23 serves as a 00 guide for the proper movement of the testing device. A stop-block 82 limits the movement of the pin 72.
F rom the above described construction it is seen that when the testing device is in its operative position, as shown in Figs. (i, 7 and S, it is maintained in that position by means of the pin 72 within the hole 73. lVhen it is desired to examine the contents ol the testing device. it is not necessary to withdraw the liquid from the receptacle,but by pulling upward upon the extended por y tion of the link7G.the pin 72 is withdrawn from within the hole T53 and the entire testing device may be withdrawn, the top G5 35 removed, the contents examined, the top replaced and the device lowered into place, the release of the link 7G allowing the pin 72 to enter the hole 7 3.
The operation of 'the device is as follows: The top of each one of the fiber compartments is opened after* removing the gear 45 and the shaft 46, the necessary quantity of hoisery, or other fiber material, introduced and the top closed and locked. When all of the liber chambers and the testing device contain the fiber, the gear 45 and the shaft 46 are replaced and the reel, its contents and the testing device are revolved and the desired liquid introduced through 30 the members 38 and 37Ainto the interior of the reel, whence it passes throu h the foraminous cylinder 24 into all o the fiber chambers and then outwardly through the foraminous tops into the receptacle and 85 then through the overflow pipe 49 back for continuous circulation. At the same time the liquid passes through the opening 70 into the testing device and through the same.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number or arrangements o parts described and shown, all of which may be varied without going beyond the scope of my invention as described and claimed.
Vthat l claim is l. ln a dyeing machine, in combination, a receptacle, a hollow revoluble foraminous cylinder within the receptacle; means for revolving the cylinder; two imperforate end flanges carried by the cylinder forming a reel therewith; a series of foraminous plates carried by the cylinder and longitudinal thereof, said plates abutting upon the end flanges; a removable foraminous cover for each fiber chamber formed by the cylinder, the foraminous plates and the flanges, and means exterior of the receptacle for the continuous forcing of a liquid through the device.
2. ln a dyeing machine, in combination, a receptacle, a hollow revoluble foraminous cylinder comprising a series of spaced parallel extended members within the receptacle; means for revolving the cylinder; two imperforate end flanges :arried by the cylinder forming a reel therewith; a series of foraminous plates carried by the cylinder and longitudinal thereof, said plates abutting upon the end flanges; a removable foraminous cover for each liber chamber formed by the cylinder, the foraminous plates and the flanges; and means exterior of the receptacle for the continuous forcing of a liquid through the device.
