HENRY TOPPING, 0]? ASHLEY, ILLINOIS.
SAW-HANDLE. '1
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 22 192() Application filed October 4, 1919. Serial No. 328,422.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY TorrINo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashley, in the county of Washington and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates more particularly to saw handle structures, and the means for securing saw blades thereto.
The object is to provide a handle that may be made of a number of pieces, thereby reducing the initial cost of the lumber, and to employ in connection therewith means for securing the sections together, said means also performing the function of holding the saw blade to the handle.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein l Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the saw handle and a portion of a blade in place thereon.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale, and on the line 2-2 of F ig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the rear end of the saw blade.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in the figures of the draw-- in s.
n the embodiment illustrated, the handle is made of two sections 5 and 6, each section being of the thickness of the handle, and said sections bein as illustrated. T e usual hand-receiving opening 7 is formed in the handle and ex tends into both sections 5 and 6, and a hand grip 8, located at the rear side of the opening 7, is formed of both sections. The portions of the hand grip are tied together by a suitable fastener, as for example, a double-- ended screw 9 threaded into both sections and bridging the joint between them.
The front portion of the handle is provided with the usual saw blade-receiving slot .10, the inner end of said slot terminating in an enlarged bore or socket 11 that is circular in cross section and extends from the upper to the lower edge of the handle. The slot and socket extend through both sections 5 and 6. The saw blade is designated 12 and terminates at its rear end in teeth 13, which teeth are bowed and bent arranged edge-to-edge,
inwardly, as shown, the alternate teeth extending in opposite directions. The contour of the teeth corresponds substantially to the walls of the socket 11, in which they are engaged, as shown. A holding bolt 14 is located longitudinally in the socket and passes between the teeth. The inner end of this bolt is provided with a head 15 prefers ably in the form of a cap nut, having a slot 16 in which the adjacent portion of the blade is engaged. Another cap nut 17 is threaded upon the outer end of the bolt, be ing preferably countersunk, as shown in Fig. 1. The blade is thus effectively held to the handle, and the bolt not only constitutes the securing means for said blade, but also acts as a tie or binder between the sections 5 and 6 of the handle.
Instead of expensive brass screws or the like, ordinary rivets 18 may be employed that pass transversely through the blade 10 and the opposite leaves of the handle. While the securing means is of peculiar utility in a sectional handle, since it performs a. double function in connection therewith, it will be obvious that it may be employed in a single-piece handle.
From the foregoing. it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be'resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A saw handle having a saw blade receiving slot and an elongated enlarged socket extending along the inner end of the slot, a saw blade engaged in the slot and having a hollow enlargement in the socket and a holding device located longitudinally in the hollow enlargement.
2. A saw handle comprising sections located edge to edge, said handle having a saw blade receiving slot and an elon ated enlarged socket extending along the inner end of the slot, the slot and socket extending into both sections, a saw blade engaged in the slot and having a hollow enlargement in the socket and a holding device located longitudinally in the hollow enlargement and extending into both sections of the blade.
8. A handle having a saw-blade receiving slot and an elongated socket extending along the inner end of the same, a saw blade en gaged in the slot and having a laterally enlarged terminal portion in the socket, and a holding bolt located longitudinally in the socket and engaged longitudinally in-the en larged portion of the saw blade.
4. A handle having a saw-blade receiving slot and an elongated socket extending along the inner end of the same, a saw blade engaged in the slot and having sets of 0ppositely and laterally curved teeth in the socket, and a holding bolt in the socket and located between the teeth.
5. A saw handle comprising sections of the thickness of the handle and located edge to edge, said handle having a handreceiving opening formed partially in the different sections, and a hand grip in one side of the opening formed partially of the different sections, said handle furthermore having a saw blade receiving slot and a socket at the inner end of the slot, both located in the different sections, a saw blade in the slot having offset inwardly curved oppositely extending teeth located in the socket, and a bolt located longitudinally .in the socket and extending between the teeth, said bolt having an inner head interlocked with the saw blade.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
