Description

H. BROWN.
POCKET FOR GARMENTS.
APPLICATION FILED Aus Patented June 22, 1920.
PATENT OFFICE.
, HEBMANBROWN, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
YPOCKET ron GARMENTS. j
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 22 1920A Application filed August 23, 1918. Serial No. 251,101.
To all whom z't may concern: v
Be it known that I, HERMAN BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pockets for Garments, of which the following is a specifica# tion.
ments and has particular reference to the provision ofv a pocket which vis particularly adapted for a'coat 'and which is reinforced iii such manner that it isvcry materially strengthened at the points where it is attached tothe garment. A
A further object of the invention is the provision of' a pocket which will be serviceable and which will not'wear out in service such as pockets ordinarily provided in garments. My invention is particularly adapted for use in coats for street cai' 'and railway conductors or for use in any other class of trades people who use the pockets of the coats for carrying ticket andr transfer punches, making change, or for any manner of work wherein the wearer needs to' pass his hand in and out of the rpocket a great many times.
A further object of my invention is 'the provision of a pocket which will be serviceable in use and which will save material and which eliminates seams in its construction and which is easily inserted in a coat at a great saving in time to the tailor and yet gives a maximum amount of Wear. n
My invention will be further and better understood by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings and wherein* Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pocket; y,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on lines 2-2 of Fig. 1; Y
Fig. 3 is a top sectional view looking downward on lines 3 3 of Fig. 1; and.
Fig. 4L is a modification of the view `of Fie. 2. j y
Fteferring now 'specifically to the drawings and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout, 1() is a section of a coat or garment to lwhich the pocket is secured, a pocket opening being provided by a horizontal cutin the coat in the usual manner and also byr cutting or slitting the garment at right angles to the horizontally extending pocket opening at each -nf'its ends, these slits or openings extending My invention relates to `pockets for gar-f for'a Vshort distance on'each side of the horizontally extending opening, 'thus formingthe lower part 12 and upper part 130i the pocket, which parts are immediately ad- Jacent each other and 'each of these parts are integral with the garment or coat 10. A bag 11 of the usual form is provided and is secured at its upper inside edge to the upper part 13 of the pocket by a row of stitching 14. Secured to the upper part 13 of the pocket by the stitching 14 is a facing member 15,7preferablyof leather or any other suitable material, the facing Amember l5 and the bag 11 being secured together by means of stitching 16. This facing member l5 is positioned in suoli manner that its upper edge is above the lower part 12 of the pocket and extends through the vertical slits or cuts heretofore described and under the cloth comprising the coat or garment 1 0 as shown in Fig. '3.
Folded over the edge of the lower part 12 of the pocket and secured thereto by a row of stitching l17 is a facing 18 preferably of leather but-may be of any other suitable material, the inner part of which extends downward inside of the pocket opening and has secured thereto at its upper inside edge the bag 11 by means of a row of stitching 19. This member 18 extends through the verti- 1 cal pocket openings heretofore described at each of its ends. rlhe members 15 and 18 are secured together at each of their ends as at 20, 20, preferably by stitching which passes through the garment 10 and also through the bag .11 and thus the pocket is reinforced and strengthened at each of its corners and the weight of any object carried within the pocket is supported upon the members 15 and 1S by reason of their heilig sewed together at their ends. A slight modification of the pocket is shown in Fig.
i wherein a pair of triangular shaped reinforcing members 21 and 22, preferably ofV leather, are stitched to the outside of the garment at each side of the rpocket opening, the vertically extending edges 23, 23 of the members 21 and 22 registering with the outside edgcs of the pocket opening provided by the vertically extending cuts heretofore described, the said members 21 and 22 being stitched along their outside marginal edges through the garment 10 and the ends of both of the members 15 and `18 and also through the inside upper edge of the bag 11 so that in addition to the strength afforded by sewing the ends of the reinforcing facings 15 and 1S together an additional amount of strength is secured by the reinforcing' members 21 and 22 being secured to the garment in the manner described above.
It Will be thus understood that in making up a pocket in a coat a pocket opening is made in the coat as heretofore described, the bag 11 to which the reinforcing facings 15 and 18 have been previously secured. is placed in proper position, the facing 1S is folded over the edge of the lower part 12 of the pocket and secured in position by the row of stitching 17 the stitching 20, 2O may also then be put in as Well as 14 and the complete pocket is inserted in the garment at a Very material saving in time and labor.
It Will be thus understood that I provide a pocket which has the edges of the pocketopening protected against Wear due to the constant passing in and out of the hand of the wearer of the garment, particularly where a ticket or other punch is carried in the pocket.
fhile I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not 'wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient Without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
I claim:
In combination, a garment having a pocket opening therein formed by a horizontal cut in said garment and vertically extending cuts at the ends of said horizontal cut, an inner reinforcing member secured to the face of the garment and extending above and below the inner marginal. edge of the pocket opening, an outer reinforcing member folded over theouter marginal edge of the pocket opening, the ends of both of said reinforcing members extending' through the vertically extemling cuts in said garment and being stitched together at their ends and also to the garment, and a bag secured to said reinforcing members.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 17th day of August, 1918.
HERMAN BROWN.
