EDWIN r. M- SPEIDEIQOF EDGEWOOD, nnon'r. IsLAND, Assronon' TO AUTOMATIC GOLD CHAIN 00M 7 Application filed April 3,
To all w/ wm" it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. M. SPEIDEL, a subject of the dent of Edgewood, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catch Devices, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a catch device commonly known as a watch-chain swivel, the same being more particularly adapted for use as a fastening for the ends of chains constructed for personal wear, and the object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of devices of this character which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and is strong and durable in construction. 7
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features 01: construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1- is a side elevation partly in section illustrating the structure 01" my new catch device.
is a plan view 9 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the loop member of the device, before the end is cut off to form the hook.
lleierring to the drawings, 10 designates the body member which is preferably drawn up oi sheet stock into elongated, tubular form having an end wall 11 in which is F o; 53w sectioned on line formed a transverse slot or opening 12 ofthe required length and width.
The hook member 13 is preferably formed of wire the same being of any suitable shape in cross section. One portion of the hook being bent into how form as at 14 its end when finished being cut on an incline as at 15. The shank portion 16 of the hook is provided with an and 17 turned inwardly to form an arm set at substantially a right angle to the shank. This arm portion is adapted to fit into the slot 12 and be permanently fastened therein by solder or other suitable means.
The extremity 18 of this arm is prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably rounded 011 its under side to form a caring on which the hook-closing tongue member 19 may swing.
This hook-closing tongue is also formed. of wire, the same in cross section as the hook portion, its inner end 20 being provided with a circular recess to fit the rounded end 18 of the arm and this portion of the closing tongue is arranged to extend beyond this end beneatl the arm and'in line with the same and is provided with a pin 21 over which the end of the coil spring 22 fits, the opposite end of this coil spring engaging the opposite wall 23 of the body member, said spring acting upon the closing tongue 19 to hold it in contact with the end of arm 18 and also to swing it back to closed position and hold it normally closed after having been pressed inwardly to open the hook.
lly improved hook is provided with a number 01 practical and structural advan tages; first, the bow portion is formed in the shape illustrated in Fig. 3 with an elongated end 9 which with arm 17 is soldered in position the end 19 extending through the slot 12 assists in accurately positioning the arm 17 while being soldered in the slot; next the portion 19 is cut from the loop 15 and is withdrawn from the slot and subsequently shaped into the form illustrated in F 1g. 1, to
e fulcrumed on the under side of the arm 17 and after this has been passed through the remaining open portion of the slot and its projection 21 inserted into the end of the spring this tongue member is securely locked in position in its housing and cannot be again removed therefrom.
y this construction this tongue member firmly supported against lateral motion both by its contact with the broad surface of the arm 12 and also by of the slot.
Another advantage of this construction is that by positioning the two parts in the slot in the body member this slot is entirely closed and so prevents foreign matter from finding its way therein to clog the action of the operating parts.
The device is extremely simple in construction and effective in its operation.
y soldering the long arm 17 lengthwise the side walls 24:
in the slot 12 the connection between the body and the hook is made extremely strong and durable.
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only 10 by the terms of the appended claim.
I claim: A catch device comprising a hollow body member having an end wall provided with a transverse slot therethrough, a hook member 15 having a shank portion w1th one end extending at substantially a right angle to said EDWIN F. M. SPEIDEL.
