TYPE HOLDER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV HOFFMAN, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TYPE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern: F
Be it known that I,GUSTAV HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Type- I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in type holders, and more especially to such holders employed as markforming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side view, showing parts in section of the type holder embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a partial transverse section of the same,
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, and
Fig. 1 is a detailed view of one of the type bodies employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a suitable body or handle 5, having a type receiving socket 6 in one end thereof adapted to receive the type 7 with the operative faces of the type protruding from the body, shown. Each. of the type bars or blocks 7 is provided on one side with a semi-cylindrical notch 7 and a bore is extended through one side of the socket 6, said bore being enlarged at its opposite ends to form receiving reg cesses S and 9. A locking pin 10 is longitudinally insertible in said bore so as to .fit within the notches 7 of the type bar 7 to lock said type bars in place. The pin 10 is provided at one end with a head 11, fitting within the recess 8, as indicated, and the other end of the pin protrudes slightly into the recess 9, as shown. A spring-held latch 12 is slidably mounted in the body 5 in a substantially U-shaped recess 13 therein. The latch 12 is substantially Specification of Letters Patent.
, as indicated,v

U-shaped in form, one limb 14 thereof being arranged and adapted to project into the recess 8 across the outer side of thehead 11 of the pin :10, when said pin is in looking position. The other limb 15 of the latch 12 carries. a push-button 16 projecting from the 1 face of. the holder. 5, and a compression \springl'i' normally holds the latch 12 in engagement with the ,head'll of pin. 10.
By this arrangement, it will be observed that the type bar will be securely and solidly held locked in the typesocket 6 during the I use thereof. lVhen it is desired to remove the type, the button 16 is depressed with the thumb,-thus releasing the pin 10, which may then be removed, thus releasing the type 7. Should the pin 10 stick in its bore for any cause, the same may be readily removed by striking the end thereof in the recess9, which thus protects the protrud- Y ing end of the pin,-and gives access thereto. The specific form and arrangement of parts is a simple and effective one for the purpose. While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A type holder comprising a body, having a type receiving socket therein and a bore traversing one side of said socket; a locking pin longitudinally insertible in and removable from said bore; type insertible in. said socket and notched to engage said pin; and a spring-held latch engaging said pin to prevent removal thereof, substantially as described. I
2. A. type holder comprising a body, having type receiving socket therein and a bore traversing one side of said socket; a
locking pin longitudinally insertible in and removable from said bore, the head of said pin engaging-one side of said body; type insertible in said socket and notched to engage saidpin; and a spring-held latch engaging across the head of said pin to prevent theremoval thereof, substantially as described 3. A type holder comprising a body, havin a type receiving socket therein and a bore traversing one side of said socket,'one side of said bore being enlarged into a re ceiving recess; a locking pin longitudinally insertible in and removable from said here, the head of said pin fitting into said recess; type insertible in said socket and notched to engage said pin; and a springheld latch engaging across the head of said pin to prevent the removal thereof, substantially as described.
4. A type holeer comprising a body, having a type receiving socket, therein and bore traversing one side of said socket, one side of said here oeing enlarged into a receiving recess; a locking pin longitudinally insertible in and removable from said bore, the head of said pin fitting into said recess; type insertible in said socket and notched to engage said pin; a spring-held latch engaging across the head of said pin topre vent the removal thereof; and a depressible pin for releasing said latch, substantially as described.
5. A type holder comprising a body, haw
other limb of said latch being provided with 5 a button projecting from the side of said body whereby the depression of said button releases said pin, substantially as described.
.In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
