c'oL'L PsIBLn BENCH.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'WAN DANYLUK, a
citizen of Austria, andresidingat Veimar,
county of Colorado, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Benches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsln work benches, and like structures, and has as its special object the provision of a bench I which may be folded into a small compass when not required for use.
A further object is to provide a firm and substantial level top for the bench, together with a shelf or support midway in the height of the bench.
A till further object is to provide means whereby the top of the bench is engaged with the supports in a novel and secure man-- ner whereby it is prevented from complete separation therefrom at all times.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a perspective view showing a work table or bench madein accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof, the same being shown in a folded position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective showing the parts when in a similar position.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantally on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken through a corner of the device, showing the attaching means employed in connection therewith.
The bench comprises a pair of rear legs 10, joined with the intermediate legs 11, these pairs having between them a backboard 12, and connected to each other by end plates 14.
Also extending between the pairs of legs is a shelf 15, thereby forming a top, side and ends of the permanent structure. Other legs 16, which form the front supports of the bench, have fixed upon their inner sides end plates 17', engaged by hinges 18 with the outer portion of the intermediate legs 11, so that the plates 17 may be swung outwardly over the ends 14, the legs 16 at that Specificationof Letters P-atent. Patented June Application filed arch 18,1919. Serial no. 283,381.
. T-shap'ed slots 33,
time being positioned outside of the rear legs 10.-
A front'plate or support20 is attached by hinges 21 tothe front edge of the perma-' nent shelf 15, and is provided with catches 22, engageable with eyes 23,-fixed upon the inner surfaces of the front legs 16, when the bench is in an extended or operative position, as shown best in F ig. 1.
The upper ends of the rear legs 10 contain fixed pins 25 set in recesses 26 from which I extend right angular central recesses 27,
the saine having a horizontal lower edge 28, and a vertical edge 29, at 90 therefrom, while the ends of the legs are formed with curved surfaces 24 radially from the pins 25.
Enciroling the fixed pins 25, are eyes 31 formed at one end of stems -30 which have rectangular heads 32 at the outer, free ends, the heads being slidably engaged within while the stems 3O pass through, thenarrow portions 34 of the slots which are formed in the inner side of the top plate he ends of the slots terminate within the plate 35, at. such a distance from its edges that when they are turned or folded downward, as shownin Fig.4, they support the plate so that its front edge is level with the upper edges of resting upon the upper edges of the plates 14, as to be properly distancedwith relation thereto, slightly overhanging as best shown in Fig. 3.
The front edgeof the plate 35 is engaged by hinges 36 with the front plate 37, the same forming a cover for the bench when turned'npon the hinges 36, when the plate is extended over the rear of the bench, the front plate resting upon the upper edges of the end elements 18, and'frontlegs 16 when extended outward, presenting a level firm surface upon which work operations may be performed in a convenient manner,
while the shelf elements 15 and 20, when extended, furnish adequate space for holding material. i
From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat appearing and substantial bench has been disclosed, which may be so. folded as to occupy. but half its normal space when extended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a folding bench, the combination with two pairs of rigid legs, of a back plate connected therebetween, elements engaged between each of said pairs, extension plates hingedly engaged with said elements, another pair of legs engaged with the outer edges of said extension plates, atop plate disposable over the first-named end elements, a second top plate hingedly engaged with the first top plate disposable over said extension plates when in outward position, and a folding shelf secured between said end plates below said top plates, headed bolts pivotally engaged in the upper rear corners of the rear pair of said rigid legs, T-shaped slots in said first-named top plate in which the heads of said bolts are slidably engaged, transverse pins in said rear pair of rigid legs, the upper corners of said legs being formed with curves having their centers at the axes of said pins, said headed bolts having eyes pivoted on said pins and an extending rectangular head slidable in said T-shaped slots.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification this 15th day of February, 1919.
IflVAN DA NY LUK.
