IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR SETTING UP SPOKES OF WHEELS.

which the following is a specification:
' Nature and Objects of the Invention.
This invention relates to means for setting up sector spokes in the manufacture of wheels for carriages and wagons. The invention consists, primarily, in a table or frame furnished with means for olampin g 'or holding the spokes together radially onto a common center, the same being mounted on a vertical pivot so that it may be rotated to facilitate the operation, and constructed with radial arms to support the spokes, in order to facilitate their arrangement and to economize material. The invention further consists in a central clamp of peculiar construction to properly hold the hub ends of the spokes, and in means for adjusting or varying the same to adapt the apparatus for setting up different sizes and styles of wheel; also, in a clamp or clamps intermediate to those above referred to by which to prevent the spokes from springing vertically or laterally during the setting-up process.
Description of the Drawing.
General Description.
The apparatus consists, in a preferred form, as illustrated, of a base, A, a rotaryhorizontal table, B, to receive and support the spokes and clamps, a circular series of jacks, U, to engage with the ends of the spokes, a central clamp, D, to hold the hub ends of the spokes,
" and an intermediate clamp, E, to prevent any vertical or lateral springing of the individual spokes. The base A constitutes a step for a vertical pivot, e, by whichthe table B is supported, and adapted to rotate so that the operator need not move from one place. The tableis composed of a hub or central disk, 4 and radial arms m, secured to the top of the same. These arms correspond in number and position with the spokes of the style of wheel which is to'be made, and each arm is constructed with a vertical longitudinal slot, to, and a terminal abutment, c. A central depression, n, is furnished to receive the clamp D, and vertical bolts t to form parts of the intermediate clamp E. The jacks O are'composed of power devices 8 and followers 1", with the guideslots w and abutments o of the table, and they serve to force the respective spokes radially to their common center, and thus to clamp them together. v The centralclamp D is composed of a pair of disks, q p. and a central bolt, 0, with nut n. The lower disk q is supported in the depression n of the table on setscrews in, by which to adjust it as to height, and is constructed with a slot, 1, and stop-pin k, Fig. 5, to receive-the corresponding head j of the bolt 0, so as to render the bolt detachable. It is also constructed with guide-notches i, to engage with .correspondin g flanges in the depression n. This clamp serves to hold the hub ends of the spokes in a given plane.
Sets of disks may be employed to suit different styles of wheel. The intermediate clamp E consists of a ring, h, Fig. 6, constructed with notches g in its under side, to engage with the spokes, and with perforated lugs f, in combination with the bolts t projecting from the table, and nuts e thereon. This clamp serves to hold the spokes down on the table and to prevent lateral springing, so as to hold the spokes positively in radial position.
In operation, the workman stands at one point, and, turning the table, as required, places the glued sector spokes in opposite pairs on the table until the complement is made up, each spoke, except the last, being clamped against the center bolt by the jack O atits outer end when it is applied. The
final or keyspoke being placed on the table,
the clamps D and E are tightened, and this spoke is then driven home, the others being adjusted, if necessary, when the apparatus is left until the spokes have set.
The power devices s of the jacks C may be Wedges, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, or screws, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or any preferred mechanical substitute may be employed. The table B may be modified by employing a solid disk instead of the radial arms :0. The central and intermediate clamps D E also admit of modification, and more than one of the latter may be employed.
Claims.
The following is claimed as new- 1. The rotary-setting-up table B, having a circular series of independent radial jacks, O, and mounted on a vertical pivot, z, in the base A, and constructed with radial arms a, as herein described, for the-purpose set forth.
2. The central clamp D, composed of the bolt 0, nut n, and changeable disks 1) q, constructed and combined, substantially as set forth, for holding the hub ends of sector-spokes in the preparatory setting-up operation herein described.
3. The adjusting set-screws m arranged beneath the changeable central clamp I), in combination therewith, for the purpose specified.
4. The intermediate clamp E arranged and operating as described, in combination with the table B, radial jacks G, and central clamp D, for the purpose set forth.
